Amazon Aurora

Amazon Aurora should be considered for those who need a fast and reliable cloud database service. It includes the main features of a MySQL database, using the latest trends in architectural principals. It ensures out-of-the-box fault-tolerance and high scalability. It is also very important for those who don’t want to worry about features and security updates. As the price is higher than a standard MySQL for instance, it should only be considered for higher applications where performance and scalability is really important.

Pros

  • Amazon Aurora has high availability, since the customer started to use it, the database never had to be left out of service.
  • Amazon Aurora provides frequent and automated upgrades, which makes our database system always up to date on the latest features and security practices
  • Since Amazon Aurora uses MySQL as its core database, it is very easy to find specialized people to work. Amazon’s relational database management system also makes it very easy to expand and create new databases

  • Data management: Oracle 12c does a great job in storing, retrieving and processing data.
  • Performance Management: We make uses of features provided with in Oracle Enterprise Manager as well as SQL tuning capabilities to manage out queries and closely monitor the performance.
  • Improved support experience compared to older version.
  • Easy to upgrade and maintain when coupled with the new features and security that is delivered for the most up to date version of Oracle.

Cons

  • The cost of Amazon Aurora when compared to a simple MySQL instance is considerably higher, so we really need to look at and run some performance tests to compare if the performance improvements are worth the extra cost.
  • Although backup restores are a rare feature to use, when we need them it is always painful to restore our data. We are always searching for a database service to provide new and innovating features in terms of data recovery. For instance, being able to search on backup information to see if the needed data is there. It is a very common need to compare the hot data with the backup data, for example to fix some database data that a malfunction application wrongly updated.
  • Since aurora is an Amazon relational database service there is no way to run a dev database on a local storage for tests and development.

  • Oracle 12c SQL Developer is included with the product for no additional licensing cost, but it is much more limited compared to query tools such as TOAD.
  • Oracle 12c stumbles on certain queries with the optimizer not catching simple methods to return queries very quickly. Often a scalar subquery is required to reduce the time by up to 99%.
  • On occasion, the optimizer can miss simple changes such as IN ('1','2','3') working but BETWEEN '1' AND '3' being stuck in an infinite loop.

There is a lot of sunk cost in a product like Oracle 12c. It is doing a great job, it would not provide us much benefit to switch to another product even if it did the same thing due to the work involved in making such a switch. It would not be cost effective.

Most of the time the Support is good and respond according to the expectations. However, there were occasions where it took a long time to get the issue resolved, needed escalations

Alternatives Considered

Unlike proprietary solutions like Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon Aurora does not need proprietary licensing, so we can use this budget to get cloud solutions with high availability and performance, at a similar rate. When compared to MySQL or Postgres SQL, it allows us to have a database system always updated with the most current features and security best practices without having to worry about it. In normal database systems like MySQL to keep the database system up to date we need to have someone always looking for new upgrades. As it relies on MySQL there is no extra formation for a team that is already used to a MySQL solution.

Its not a straight forward comparison, but the other major DB platform we use is Actian Matrix. The latter being a columnar non-relational database, it really is a case of comparing apples to oranges - both are fruits but beyond that entirely different. Or in this case, both are 'databases' but aside from a share common SQL structure, they are quite different. Oracle is great at indexing and dealing with relatively small amounts of data. Actian Matrix is fantastic for data mining and massive amounts of data. Different tools for different jobs.

Return on Investment

  • The customers where we implemented Amazon Aurora database don't need to have an employee specialized in features and security upgrades.
  • The database replication and schedule for backup tasks are much easier, so less prone to errors.
  • We have never had a database downtime on our applications, which is essential for our customer business.

  • Oracle Database 12c allows us to have a smaller IT department than many other organizations. There are tools associated with it such as Oracle Enterprise Manager that allow us to automate administrative tasks and alert us when there are problems which frees us up to do other more important tasks.
  • It has also allowed us to continue having good throughput of transactions. When registration opens for each new term, our systems are slammed with students logging on. In the past students would have to wait in line to get registered, sometimes waiting for hours. Improved performance with better releases of Oracle Database as well as streamlined hardware have eliminated this.
  • Oracle works with all of its customers, especially educational institutions to work out pricing so that you can get what you really need. Even though they are pricey, if you are willing to meet with them, they will work with you to help you determine which options are most suited to meeting your business goals. They aren't just trying to sell software at all costs.
