Amazon Aurora
Many places where Aurora is well suited:
- If you are trying to build a serverless backend.
- Amazon hosted relational database service (RDS). So we do not have to manage the database maintenance.
- Backup and archival can be done to AWS S3, which is very convenient.
- It provides high performance and scalability.
- It's very secure. You could use AWS Key management service (KMS) to encrypt and store data on AWS Aurora.

If you have any apps in the cloud, this is the way to go. The interface and management is much better than AWS, and no one else is getting closer. If you are running just BI, you could go with a Snowflake or Cloudera approach, but Cloudera is complex and Snowflake simply sits on top of Azure Data Storage anyway, and I hear will soon be an offering by Microsoft as well.

Pros
- The MySQL compatibility meant we didn't have to change anything in our system which used to run on a MySQL database. It was a very simple configuration change to point at the new instance once set up
- Much better performance than our previous MySQL database (hosted on AWS RDS) for lower costs due to the way storage is managed
- Storage management is much more simple as it grows and shrinks with you without having to allocate and deallocate storage to the database

- Control of access and security is easy to manage and share within our team. Response is quick and quite a bit of things are preloaded to help.
- Having the SQL component reside directly within our subscription makes connecting and managing very easy and highly transparent. Added spots for notes on things like why an IP is whitelisted is very helpful when working with a large team that includes off-shore components.
- Scalability is another bonus, easy to scale up or down during peak times, and even automate that function makes it almost competitive with something like Snowflake.

- I'd like to see Amazon Aurora get ahead of the curve on MySQL and introduce their own improvements to MySQL to make it a superior database so that I don't need to use SQL Server or Oracle to get performance improvements. For example, improve performance of views.
- Amazon Aurora needs to improve the ability to restore backups as needed. Currently, the user can only restore an entire instance to a new or existing RDBMS instance. If you need to retrieve data from a single table, this can be tedious after waiting hours for an entire restore to complete. Instead, allow the user to select a database to restore. Better yet, allow the user to restore a database backup to ANOTHER database - which would allow you to restore a database on the same instance.
- Again beat MySQL to the punch and introduce REAL server to server communication since they have disabled the "Federated Engine" which was the only way previously to do this. I'd like to be able to setup MySQL instances to talk to other MySQL instances.

Computer Software Company, 11-50 employees- A little slow on processing complex or large Views. We use a lot of Views to feed our BI system, and the processing time could see some improvement, IMHO.
- Additional monitoring components would be nice too, automating some built in performance measurement tools would be a nice feature.
- Price can always be improved as well. It’s not bad, but room for improvement.

Using cloud-based services such as RDS or Aurora take all the hassle out of managing database servers yourself. It also gives you the flexibility to easily spin up and down additional instances and as when required. Where Aurora outshines RDS is in terms of performance - we saw around 2-5x improvement in query read times across the board.

Comparing with Amazon Aurora: Azure SQL DB is 100% compatible with SQL Server and Aurora is compatible with MySQL and PostGreSQL. Because of if, SQL DB suits large enterprises with hundreds of databases better. Comparing with Oracle: the main issue is that Oracle will try to push all other services available in their product offering.

- The big plus here is the security with our users. We sell our software and the companies that buy it are concerned with our employees stealing information. Azure really helped improved our security more efficiently so no one that isn't supposed to can see our partner's data.
- The average query running time has significantly decreased, which is huge.
