Amazon Chime

Amazon Chime is a superior alternative to other free video conference/conference call programs. The call and video quality are great, and you can have multiple participants on both video and call. It's well suited for an organization that wants an affordable option for video and conference calls, but may not be appropriate for organizations with limited budgets or those who do very little conferencing.

Confluence

Confluence makes it relatively easy to produce richly formatted documents for an organization. By making it easy, Confluence takes away many of the barriers individuals might find for not documenting procedures, etc. The key to success with Confluence is to configure an organizational structure efficiently from the outset. It becomes more difficult to change or reorganize once something is established, and can lead to poor search results of a fragmented document store.

  • Confluence is incredibly easy to use - and is simple for both technical and non-technical staff to use. It is easy to create content, and edit existing content.
  • The template system makes it easy for people to keep to a consistent format for some tasks, and creating new templates is pretty easy.
  • The system is easy to update and administer. It requires very little time and resources, especially since the 4.x/5.x versions.
  • It integrates well with our multifactor authentication system (Duo).

  • As we are using Confluence more and more to manage projects, it is lacking some key functions related to project management, such as a visual Gantt chart. It has made progress though with the Page Properties macro and related report to identify projects.
  • It would be nice to edit a spreadsheet within Confluence and use the basic functions of Excel (sum, ...)
  • Links to PDF files are a 3-step process with an automatic download; a option to preview the file (like an image) would be useful (specially on mobile devices)
  • Email reminder/notifications for task due in a day or two could be useful for some users.

Confluence usage in our business is new (2-3 years I think) and the efforts of switching the documentation center is huge compared to the time needed to migrate so its expected to continue for a couple of years. A lot of business I've been in are considering a knowledge database something that is cool to have but not something that needs to be top notch. So investing time and efforts into structuring and bringing people up to speed with a single tool is hard to justify to the higher instances of the business sometimes

Pages load quickly. If something closes abruptly (such as the browser), it lets us know when work needs to be reviewed/saved/deleted to avoid any unintentional overrides.

I have not had a lot of support experiences with Atlassian, but of the few I have, I wasn't very satisfied with the results. I found that multiple people would respond to the issue at various stages, requiring re-communication (even though the support system stores everything and shows it to both them and you). Often responses came at odd hours, resulting in 24+ hour turnaround on basic responses, even if you respond right away. Support often asks you to do things which require downtime, and don't seem sympathetic if your organization requires that downtime to be done off-hours. This makes it difficult to resolve issues in a timely manner, if at all.I must note that I have not opened a support incident with them in close to 2 years, and it's my understanding from colleagues that there has been much improvement. My comments and ratings reflect my older experiences.

Alternatives Considered

Chime and Biba are interchangeable to me, both accomplish the same task. We have transitioned to Chime as it was created by Amazon and we support Amazon, so it was an easy decision for us. I do enjoy Chime more as it just seems to work effortlessly. I would recommend it to all.

Anyone who has made an edit on Wikipedia knows what it's like to use MediaWiki. I occasionally find an instance where I'm using it, but I don't use it often. I have done a conversion from MediaWiki to Confluence and it was painful.TWiki and DokuWiki (along with others I don't remember anymore) were evaluated for a client of mine many years ago (they really wanted something free). Once we tried Confluence, those options were not in the running, and Confluence was the clear winner. It just felt right, whereas with all the others it felt like a struggle to use.In my opinion Confluence blows SharePoint's wiki out of the water.Confluence has a SharePoint connector, which provides some integration between SharePoint as a document management system and Confluence as a wiki. It seems promising, but I have not personally used I don't currently use SharePoint in production.

  • Positive - easy communication with the chat room feature for all teams (15+) throughout our campus.
  • Positive - user-friendly and easy to navigate so we weren't hindered with the transition.
  • Positive - Amazon Chime allows you to call in via the phone if a computer is not available. We are always on the go and phones are all that are available.
