Amazon Chime

Amazon Chime is a superior alternative to other free video conference/conference call programs. The call and video quality are great, and you can have multiple participants on both video and call. It's well suited for an organization that wants an affordable option for video and conference calls, but may not be appropriate for organizations with limited budgets or those who do very little conferencing.

Jabber

Jabber is just one communication tool we offer to our organization, but it is a powerful one. The key to its power is integration with other applications, such as Microsoft Outlook and SharePoint. We also use Cisco WebEx, and having the integration there is helpful, but it has not been leveraged to its full potential here.

Pros

  • Connecting via the computer - this easy and so simple, just a couple of clicks.
  • Using multiple technologies - Amazon Chime also allows you to use a phone for dial-in audio. I enjoy this as my computer microphone and speakers are not the best sometimes.
  • Scheduling meetings - this is such an easy function for one time meetings or recurring.

  • Connecting various devices - Jabber connects PC, Mac, Mobile and Tablet users where end users can communicate seamlessly.
  • Presence - having Jabber integrated into Outlook has made client and inner office communications easier and provides more information to fellow users when we can see who is in a meeting, away, or busy.
  • File Sharing- inner office file sharing we have been doing through Jabber instead of email. It can very quickly process and send large files between users without bogging down our inbox, this is especially useful when collaborating on documents.
  • Communication Escalation- at any time when using Jabber there is an option to take your communication to the next level, being able to quickly and easily escalate a chat to a group chat, a group chat to a WebEx, sharing screens- it makes communicating easy through various mediums.

Cons

  • Amazon Chime can be invasive as it pops up on your computer one minute or so before your meeting time.
  • Screen sharing - this isn't a real con as the screen sharing is great, it's at times just really small and hard to view when there are a handful of people on the call.
  • Log in - this can sometimes be a challenge but [it's] not too bad.
Perry Hahn profile photo
  • Does not allow immediate document sharing
  • Its emoticons are extremely outdated
  • No way to emphasize words with bold or italics

Requires too much technical assistance to users, get more calls for supporting Jabber than other. A lot of people admit they don't use the product anymore after having to call tech support several times. They would rather pick up and use their iPhone.

Even with the Jabber client, Cisco support is outstanding, with the knowledge and quick response you would expect from them. Their engineers understand their products and our issues are usually addressed quickly and by the same person we originally connect with instead of getting passed to additional people. Follow-up is good too. Their support is thorough.

Alternatives Considered

Chime and Biba are interchangeable to me, both accomplish the same task. We have transitioned to Chime as it was created by Amazon and we support Amazon, so it was an easy decision for us. I do enjoy Chime more as it just seems to work effortlessly. I would recommend it to all.

Spark is still pretty new and does not have all the integrations but I see the new direction Cisco is moving in.

Return on Investment

  • Positive - easy communication with the chat room feature for all teams (15+) throughout our campus.
  • Positive - user-friendly and easy to navigate so we weren't hindered with the transition.
  • Positive - Amazon Chime allows you to call in via the phone if a computer is not available. We are always on the go and phones are all that are available.

  • Speeds communication between associates.
  • Less e-mail!
