For small business (5 people or less) AWS Chime is a great turn-key solution that is quick and easy to set up. For medium to large size businesses, you will need to find someone with AWS experience to set up customizations and develop with your AD. Detailed set-up can be cumbersome but not impossible.

Jabber

Truly the flexibility of not being tethered to my desk is the greatest joy of Cisco Jabber. It is so beneficial for me to be able to go to other offices and be collaborating with others but still not miss important calls to keep work flowing. This tool goes a long way to making users available to communicate while getting work done. I would totally recommend this as it is a great tool for modern professional environments.

Pros

  • The Cisco Jabber client allows a user the flexibility of location while still being available to anyone for collaboration and communication. No longer tethered to a desk to take calls. This is a huge benefit in my mind
  • Cisco Jabber also provides presence and availability status without even needing to actually call or send a message to someone to determine availability. This saves a ton of time from wasted effort trying to find someone and learn if they are available to collaborate.
  • When configured correctly Cisco Jabber can also be integrated with some calendaring systems to automatically update the status of a user.

  • There is some brand confusion that exists between Cisco communication products. This is more relevant to the support personnel and engineers that would be making decisions to implement the product. Cisco has their Spark/WebEx platform that provides collaboration/communication functionality and more to the end users. Cisco has stated at some conferences that I attended that they are committed to maintaining and developing the Cisco Jabber platform still so that is very promising since the product serves different needs.
  • Cisco Jabber is a little complex to implement properly in your environment. The larger the communication cluster the more complicated it can become. There are also some additional features like persistent chat that require extra resources like a standalone database for persistent chat.

There are still some improvements to be made between MAC and Windows users. Also the share screen between various devices does not always work. Any user can quickly adapt and understand how to use Jabber. The interface is very intuitive and straight forward. The transition between interfaces on PCs, to tablets, to mobile devices is also very consistent and set up almost identically

Even with the Jabber client, Cisco support is outstanding, with the knowledge and quick response you would expect from them. Their engineers understand their products and our issues are usually addressed quickly and by the same person we originally connect with instead of getting passed to additional people. Follow-up is good too. Their support is thorough.

Alternatives Considered

I have used GoToMeeting, which is a major competitor to Amazon Chime, and I can confidently say that GoToMeeting is literally ten times better. We rarely have any of the issues with GoToMeeting that we do with Amazon Chime. I highly recommend GoToMeeting over Amazon Chime because your meetings and demos will go much smoother and the user interface is much cleaner.

Jabber is more of a softphone and chat/IM client for user communication and collaboration. Some other collaboration tools provide more features like digital whiteboarding and screen sharing as well as other features. When just considering the uses that Cisco Jabber excels at I think it is still hands down the right tool for the job. The calling and presence features are awesome and I love this product for it.

Return on Investment

  • Amazon Chime has negatively impacted our ability to perform demos and calls. Some prospects are late to calls because Chime isn't working, or they give up and don't join the call at all.
  • Amazon Chime also makes us look unprofessional when we have to ask them to download a conferencing software for screenshare meeting, when many other alternatives are web-based.

  • The efficiency in which Jabber allowed us to communicate inside the office as well as outside the office, was a great return on investment due to the time and energy savings.
