Amazon Chime

For small business (5 people or less) AWS Chime is a great turn-key solution that is quick and easy to set up. For medium to large size businesses, you will need to find someone with AWS experience to set up customizations and develop with your AD. Detailed set-up can be cumbersome but not impossible.

Trello

It doesn't matter if you are a freelancer, a small agency, a startup or a big company, as Trello is useful for all above-mentioned types of businesses. It's great for tracking daily tasks, as well as using as a tool to write down ideas. For example, I know people using Trello for their grocery shopping list and also know freelancers who use it to organize their tasks.

Pros

Amazon Chime

  • Connecting via the computer - this easy and so simple, just a couple of clicks.
  • Using multiple technologies - Amazon Chime also allows you to use a phone for dial-in audio. I enjoy this as my computer microphone and speakers are not the best sometimes.
  • Scheduling meetings - this is such an easy function for one time meetings or recurring.

Trello

  • Trello is more than a TODO list. If you use SCRUM or any sort of variant, Trello makes it very easy to follow along. The way that Trello is organized it works better than Dapulse or Basecamp.
  • Trello works with levels of organizational hierarchy. The most basic is a card. The card can contain links, files, checklists, messages, and can be assigned to certain people. The cards are placed and moved around on Lists. And a collection of Lists are called a Board. Trello allows you to use these levels however you desire.
  • Unlike Basecamp, Wunderlust, or Dapulse which are essentially virtual checklists, Trello does what they do just on the card level and way more. If you like to be able to take a step back and look at how projects are going, Trello is the program for you.

Cons

Amazon Chime

  • More simplified dial-in numbers. The PIN for our conference line is long and easy to mistype.
  • You do not have to download the Chime app in order to join a conference, but if you want to do anything beyond join (schedule a conference, participate in a group chat, control participants), you have to have the app downloaded and installed. The app that you have to download in order to launch a conference is a memory hog, and slows down a computer's boot up time.
  • The add-in for Microsoft Outlook is particularly clunky. It helps you add scheduled conference calls/video conferences to your Outlook calendar, but it can cause Outlook to crash, and creates a really slow open time for Outlook. If you can avoid downloading the Outlook Add-In, I would.
  • No built-in screen sharing capabilities.

Trello

  • I see Trello as a way for teams to work together remotely and virtually. It would be awesome to integrate video chat. We have to use a separate program to create and execute online meetings.
  • It would be great for Trello to allow you to shrink and grow the width of the lists, instead of all being uniform. That way I can shrink the width of lists that aren't important to me, in just my view.
  • Trello should consider updating the User Interface. It is very engineer looking. They could really make it beautiful.

It does everything we need it to do to manage users and content as it progresses, but could do with more improvements too such as notifications or remote notifications. We have no reason to move for now!

When you dont feel like you need a support team; when things are intuitive; when you start relying on it for numerous projects - thats when you know it has great 'usability'

For our small business, getting a few of us started well on Trello was the key, I think. As long as a couple of us were really comfortable with the interface, we could lead others and help them with any questions. From now on, anyone who works with us just naturally uses Trello for information sharing - it's just part of what we do.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Chime

Amazon Chime is great for call and video quality. It's pretty comparable to Zoom both in cost and capabilities. It's definitely superior to UberConference and Join.me, both of which are not particularly reliable. I have had call quality and the screen shares freeze up. Also, neither UberConference or Join.me have a video conferencing ability.

Trello

Trello is better than the other two mentioned in my opinion because of its flexibility as a tool, as well as its price (or lack thereof). We used the other two tools for a while before Trello and left them because of pricing (having to pay per user or per project) and because of their confusing interfaces that made it hard for us to share access to our clients without showing them everything we were doing and processing.

Return on Investment

Amazon Chime

  • Amazon Chime has been an incredibly cost effective way to add video and conference line services (with screen sharing) to our day to day operations because we have an account for free for being Vonage customers.
  • A pro account only costs $15 a month, and you only need one pro account for a small office. If others in your organization need to join, all you need is a basic account to join. You need a pro account in order to launch and administer meetings.

Trello

  • Trello has streamlined many areas of our business and has positively impacted our productivity.
  • We do not spend our meetings now talking about what has to be done. Instead, we open up Trello and are held accountable for the tasks that are on the board, or add new ones when necessary.
  • Trello has positively impacted the time it takes to share and edit work, because you can upload the most revised copy of your work to the platform and associate it with the proper task/Trello card.
