Amazon Cloud Drive

Amazon Cloud Drive is a fantastic backup solution for storing your digital files on the web, but if you want to manage, tweak, organize or otherwise maintain those files after they have reached the cloud, the experience immediately begins to suffer. This is especially noted when major competitor products like Microsoft and Dropbox offer similar services at similar prices, but offer far better interfaces for file management.

As described in the use case, it is perfect for backup data storage where you do not expect to retrieve the data often. Think of it as a data dump; it is nice to know you have a backup, but it actually is expensive and somewhat difficult to retrieve everything.

Pros

  • Amazon Drive Cloud is free and that is positive. It gives us 5GB of storage when we register
  • The application for smartphones is very useful because you can do what you do when you connect from the web browser

  • Cheap storage of backup data.
  • Can be used as a part of the entire suite of tools from Amazon, without requiring you to leave the familiar stack.

Cons

  • Amazon Drive gives you 5 GB of storage, which compared to other companies that give you 15GB, is not flashy. I think they should increase the storage capacity to a minimum of 15Gb so they can compete.
  • Amazon Drive Cloud competitors have additional text editing services, spreadsheets, online web presentation editor, among others, and this program only offers you storage. I think they should think of a strategy to become more attractive and beat the competition.

  • Enumeration of data takes hours. In order to get data back you'll need to do inventory of the bucket, but that takes a few hours to complete.
  • Data and bucket deletion also requires inventory. Moreover, it is not possible to delete a bucket that has been recently written to - making bucket deletion a lengthy ordeal: first, you perform inventory, then delete your files, but you cannot delete the bucket as you recently deleted files, so you have to wait for another day in order to delete the bucket itself.
  • While data storage is cheap and easy, data retrieval can be expensive as you only get a download quota that is a few percent of your storage.

Usability

The system is very easy to use and it's use of apps for almost all devices and hardware makes it even easier to manage and store photos and documents. I highly recommend this as an easy to use solution for novices!

It is difficult to delete the data as you have to wait for inventory and then bucket modification has to expire.

Alternatives Considered

When compared to other solutions, Amazon is the dominant household name. With that said it is a bit more expensive than the competition. Namely, Google and their entry into the cloud solutions game is being priced very aggressively and in certain cases much cheaper than Amazon. For example, for 2.1 hours you will be charged for 3 hours with Amazon vs. the 2.1 hours prorated with Google.

Since the rest of our infrastructure is in Amazon AWS, coding for sending data to Glacier just makes sense. The others are great as well, for their specific needs and uses, but having *another* third-party software to manage, be billed for, and learn/utilize can be costly in money and time.

Return on Investment

  • It's another place to store the documentation, we are using this as safety blanket. Even though it has [not] returned any monetary benefit, it gives us a good night sleep as all our important documents are safe in cloud.

  • Cheap backup storage - up to the level where it becomes only tiny fractions of your entire project, whereas other solutions would be much more expensive.
  • The established reliability of AWS also makes you sleep better at night knowing your data is going to be OK.
