Amazon Cloud Drive

Amazon Cloud Drive is a fantastic backup solution for storing your digital files on the web, but if you want to manage, tweak, organize or otherwise maintain those files after they have reached the cloud, the experience immediately begins to suffer. This is especially noted when major competitor products like Microsoft and Dropbox offer similar services at similar prices, but offer far better interfaces for file management.

Backblaze

I am like a walking Backblaze advertisement - everyone I talk to about computers gets an ear full of how great Backblaze is. I have no affiliation with the company other than an admiration for something that's done well and works so well too

Pros

  • Amazon Drive Cloud is free and that is positive. It gives us 5GB of storage when we register
  • The application for smartphones is very useful because you can do what you do when you connect from the web browser

Cons

  • They recently did some kind of update that changed it from Amazon Cloud Drive to Amazon Photos, which made things a bit confusing. Still unsure sometimes where to go or what app to open.
  • I wouldn't mind more robust functionality in terms of pausing uploads or seeing which individual files are uploaded and potentially duplicates of files that have already been uploaded.

  • I liked how I essentially forgot it was there until I needed it. However, I would like to see more (or more accessible) info about it.
  • Problems with handling external drives were somewhat confusing.
  • Occasional outages were understandable but not desirable.

As stated in my review, Backblaze simply works and works simply. You install it. It runs silently in the background storing and safeguarding all your computer data remotely. You seldom notice it until you've lost something you need - then you can quickly find it online using their interface and restore it - which is what's really important.

Alternatives Considered

Actually I think both Box and Dropbox are easier to use and have better features for sharing files, especially if you need password security on those files, but Amazon is better for storing tons of data. Box and Dropbox are much more expensive to store a lot of files.

Backblaze surpasses the other options by enabling backup of attached hard drives - a feature that when I last checked, none of the competition offered. That's huge for me, with externals full of data. Carbonite is close to BackBlaze otherwise, but lacks this key feature.iCloud/Dropbox aren't true backup services, so they're not on the level with Backblaze. Mozy Pro is comparable to Backblaze, without much visible difference.

  • Increased work operation efficiency
  • Short learning curve, easily integrated
  • Very secure with access controls

  • Reduced down time of employees with computer problems. People have been able to quickly get back to work on a new device.
