Amazon CloudWatch

Ideal for monitoring AWS services and workloads. We have several of our websites entirely hosted on AWS and we're able to get a Grafana dashboard of all the relevant metrics from CloudFront, S3, EC2, RDS, and Elastic Beanstalk. This can be set up within the hour or templated on your code for infrastructure (we do this with terraform & cloud formation). By design, it isn't suited for non-AWS workloads.

Dynatrace Application Monitoring

Very high learning curve. Take the training videos and virtually memorize them. When the product is completely understood and navigation is natural, then Dynatrace is an extremely useful too. Implementation can be tricky, but the Dynatrace team is eager to assist in all aspects of utilization. From intial evaluation, to startup, and finally to usage. They are more than willing to train as often as needed.

Pros

Amazon CloudWatch

  • Managing log retention periods is very simple with CloudWatch, and can be configured on a per-group basis.
  • Monitoring host performance is very easy when coupled with the CloudWatch Agent on an EC2 instance. A simple installation and configuration replaces an entire 3rd-party host monitoring stack.
  • CloudWatch is flexible enough for not just host monitoring, but application monitoring as well. It's easy to pipe local logs up to CloudWatch and extract structured data in order to monitor and set alerts on custom app metrics.

Dynatrace Application Monitoring

  • Visibility at every layer of the technology stack
  • Super easy installation through a single agent across every platform, to include server and workstation.
  • Easy ability to navigate through the interface and drill down to the underlying problem - without a masters degree in anything. I was up and running the day I installed the first agent.
  • Automated alerts to notify you when issues arise - before someone tells you the system crashed or is slow.
  • The ability to see the interconnected system of systems, and to see the relationships of one event on other services.

Cons

Amazon CloudWatch

  • Its limitation on only Amazon resources.
  • Cost is higher.
  • Lack of ability to create graphs on distinct counts and histograms which can make it hard quickly identify specific IP addresses that have a high request volume in a certain period. We have worked around this but a feature on the dashboard would be nice.

Dynatrace Application Monitoring

  • Not enough focus on roles and empowering the adminisrators of Dynatrace of the SaaS version
  • Under high load, performance of Dynatrace is not that good. I feel this is where it can improve.
  • A bit difficult to automate the different processes that users occupy with the different applications.

I really liked how easy it was to deploy the SaaS vesion of Dynatrace in our environment. We have a lot of tools that have plenty of capability but they don't get a whole lot of use because they would require someone who is an expert to use them. With the SaaS version of Dynatrace, all the admin functions are taken care of by the Dynatrace team (updates, patches, new features, bugs, etc.) and our small shop can focus on getting valuable metrics, alerts and issue resolution from the product.

AWS Support is great, and even besides the official support, the user community support on the web is at least as great. They give quick answers to all your questions.

The support team is prompt, well-versed with the tool, and often even familiar with our business requirements (which is great!). There are extensive forum discussions on most features and issues related to Dynatrace.Almost every time we hit a roadblock, there is a post on an online forum that has addressed it.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon CloudWatch

I can only speak to how it's positively benefited my organization. The problem was that hosting in-house servers is no longer a cost-effective solution vs. containerization in the cloud. But once you rely on hosting servers in the cloud you need a tool to manage every aspect of that including log monitoring, resource utilization, and application performance. Amazon CloudWatch is exactly the tool you need.

Dynatrace Application Monitoring

I love Dynatrace as it is a one-stop solution and can monitor all layers at the same time. It helps us to monitor and find the root cause of performance issues. Using this we can identify the costly SQL that are taking more time. We can monitor servers' health, CPU memory, disk etc.

Return on Investment

Amazon CloudWatch

  • CloudWatch is liked by the IT guys, in that it makes their job easier. Whether that actually is a positive ROI is debatable. It doesn't seem like it.
  • CloudWatch could have a positive ROI in the sense that IT professionals consider it an integral tool to streamline their management of IT resources.
  • Cloud is not a positive ROI in the sense that it doesn't appear to have saved any money on the personnel or software side.

Dynatrace Application Monitoring

  • Positive impact on finding problems we “didn’t know we had”. Other than a frustrated customer calling in before we had no way to know when specific users had issue. Now it is easily visible
  • Positive impact on bringing Dev and Ops together due to visualization of infrastructure to dev teams and application dehavior and user sessions to Ops
