Amazon CloudWatch

If you have a large cloud estate and need proactive monitoring, dashboards, and alerting then it makes sense to use CloudWatch as its obviously native to AWS. CloudWatch is well suited to anyone that wants to see into their data, their traffic, or their system health. It's the eyes and ears of AWS. It really is best for any scenario where you are hosting infrastructure with AWS and want to keep an eye on it.

Pros

  • Allows integration into non-native products (SolarWinds, Nagios, etc).
  • Proactive monitoring and recommendations.
  • Alerting and dashboards.

  • Visibility at every layer of the technology stack
  • Super easy installation through a single agent across every platform, to include server and workstation.
  • Easy ability to navigate through the interface and drill down to the underlying problem - without a masters degree in anything. I was up and running the day I installed the first agent.
  • Automated alerts to notify you when issues arise - before someone tells you the system crashed or is slow.
  • The ability to see the interconnected system of systems, and to see the relationships of one event on other services.

Cons

  • If you have to ever dig manually through logs to try to find something it can be a little overwhelming. The user interface could use some work
  • I would like the ability to create more customizable dashboards.
  • The way log streams are used feels very counterintuitive.

  • The artificial intelligence could be increased and improved upon
  • Log analytics would be a great addition
  • Less agent management

Alternatives Considered

Ultimately because we are in the AWS cloud we need a tool to report, alert, and hold our logs in AWS, and AWS cloudwatch has great integrations with all existing AWS products. There are some UX quirks and I wish the dashboarding tools could stack up against some of the competitors we have evaluated however we can never not use cloudwatch as long as we are in the AWS cloud.

We considered App Dynamics and the non-SAAS version of Dynatrace. We needed something fast, and I had previous knowledge of Dynatrace, so we didn't have a lot of time for POC's or evaluation of too many products.Dynatrace SAAS version was by far the easiest to deploy and the richest (from an information perspective) APM software of those we considered. It far exceeded my expectations of providing visibility of the many technologies (.net, java, node, IIS, etc) and the many layers of systems (workstation, server, network, database, storage, Virtualization, SQL) to get a thorough understanding of what happens from a button click on a user workstation until a result is displayed back to the user monitor, and I could trace and measure performance across every level and technology from start to finish.

Return on Investment

  • Very positive ROI, we are able to pre-empt production issues via alerting
  • CloudWatch is low cost and allows us to get enterprise level monitoring
  • CloudWatch allows us to get visibility into all of our workloads and see how traffic is increasing or decreasing and make product level decisions

  • The biggest ROI that has been seen is from identifying changes to code in pre-production before deploying and seeing high CPU utilization and other issues which have cost a lot in the past due to poor user experiences and performance
