Amazon CloudWatch

It is well suited for organizations already using a number of Amazon services, as most of these will integrate very nicely with CloudWatch. If you have detailed log retention requirements, it's quite nice as well since they make it easy to configure retention and export data to S3. The tooling for metric filters and dashboards are very customizable and sufficient for general monitoring but the UX is not the most friendly. If your organization spends a lot of time on business intelligence and performance tracking, you may want to consider a more targeted 3rd-party service.

Dynatrace Synthetic Monitoring

It adapts very well and automatically to essentially departmental applications, but with some difficulties in 'unpacking' with applications residing on the legacy host mainframe. Manages to build 90% of the reporting and dashboards completely automatically. Analyzes network traffic with a connector that recognizes, hops and correlates response times. It is very reliable.

Cons

  • Building cloudwatch dashboards can be cumbersome. You have to navigate through various screens to get the metrics you want to add.
  • Exporting alarm / alerting data is not available for further post-processing or analysis
  • You have to build alerts and alarms yourself. CloudWatch does not give you any recommendations, so you have to know what you're doing.

Alternatives Considered

Ultimately because we are in the AWS cloud we need a tool to report, alert, and hold our logs in AWS, and AWS cloudwatch has great integrations with all existing AWS products. There are some UX quirks and I wish the dashboarding tools could stack up against some of the competitors we have evaluated however we can never not use cloudwatch as long as we are in the AWS cloud.

Synthetic Monitoring automatically does what other products do only through the use of other tools or through the development of user applications that still have a high cost of maintenance. The other products are not immediately usable and require many customizations. Through the use of configuration automatisms, you can be immediately operational and, in our case, we detected several imperfections in the applications.

Return on Investment

  • CloudWatch is low cost and allows us to get enterprise level monitoring
  • CloudWatch allows us to get visibility into all of our workloads and see how traffic is increasing or decreasing and make product level decisions
