Amazon CloudWatch

If you are using other AWS products, including EC2, ECS, or Lambda, using CloudWatch is an easy decision. You will get log aggregation and instrumentation out-of-the-box. The lack of log search features may be a sticking point, though your organization does not have to use CloudWatch exclusively. If your platform does not rely on AWS products, CloudWatch should not be considered.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

Well suited to running Oracle database workloads. Native Microsoft SQL Server support would allow it to seriously compete in the IaaS market.

Pros

  • Integration with other AWS products is CloudWatch's greatest feature. CloudWatch logs and metrics are provided out-of-the-box for ECS, Lambda, Sagemaker, and most other AWS products. Log aggregation and instrumentation are difficult to configure and manage; it is great to defer that work to AWS.
  • Configuring log retention policies is simple with AWS. If your business is required to retain logs for years, being able to automatically move old logs to S3 IA or Glacier with a few clicks is convenient.
  • Configuring alerts from metrics is simple, and it is easy to integrate alerts with PagerDuty or email.

  • The only supported platform supported by PeopleSoft Cloud Manager
  • Consistent and predictable performance
  • Underlying technology design is built for resilience and performance.

Cons

  • If you have to ever dig manually through logs to try to find something it can be a little overwhelming. The user interface could use some work
  • I would like the ability to create more customizable dashboards.
  • The way log streams are used feels very counterintuitive.

  • Visual network designer would assistant in ensuring configuration matches intended design.
  • Automatic and seemless migration of VMs from OCI Classic to OCI would show that Oracle is taking cloud infrastructure service seriously.
  • Better, faster support. Traditional methods of filing SRs date back to the 1980s. Online realitime chat with support that know what they're doing is critical.
  • One click template image load from Oracle Cloud Marketplace is basic omission. It's available for oci-c but not oci.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon CloudWatch stacks up against the competition pretty well. I personally like more customizable tools like Sensu and Graphite/Grafana to alert and visualize data but there are some pieces of infrastructure and some data points you just can't get without using Amazon CloudWatch. I usually use a hybrid of tools

on Azure you can't migrate your licensesazure is good for other instances like SQL servers that we own

Return on Investment

  • Very positive ROI, we are able to pre-empt production issues via alerting
  • CloudWatch is low cost and allows us to get enterprise level monitoring
  • CloudWatch allows us to get visibility into all of our workloads and see how traffic is increasing or decreasing and make product level decisions

  • it made out life easier in what it concerns environments maintenance
  • easy to evaluate the price of technology infrastructure
