Amazon EMR

Amazon Elastic MapReduce is useful in cases where two conditions are met. First, that you are planning on using multiple big data tools simultaneously to analyze big data sets. And second, that you need a tool that simplifies managing big data tools. If these two conditions are met, MapReduce does a great job. The user interface is simple. The program eliminates some programming requirements. The software also makes setting up big data analyses much easier. With these benefits acknowledged, MapReduce is not a good tool for "small" data analyses, given that there are other tools that do the job quicker and much more professional output. If you're on the fence, try out MapReduce with competing "small" data tools and see if you really need big data software.

Microsoft Azure

We are currently moving all of our custom code and deployments over. For any new projects it has been seamless and allows us to be super responsive to our business needs. We are also migrating our legacy applications over as well, but this has been more time consuming as each app seems to need something custom. Some type of migration tool would be nice. Over all we are extremely pleased with the ease of use once set up

Cons

  • Cost overhead is a bit high
  • Limited versions of frameworks that can be used

  • Poor documentation -- Microsoft's documentation can take a while to get used to, as the format and tutorials are a bit different compared to AWS and other cloud computing platforms.
  • Some code interfaces/SDKs are not well-designed. Specifically, the Python and Java SDKs can be quite difficult to integrate.
  • It's difficult to onboard, due to the lack of beginner-oriented documentation for some of the ML products. Some of the products require extensive knowledge of how to use Azure in production.

Moving to Azure was and still is an organizational strategy and not simply changing vendors. Our product roadmap revolved around Azure as we are in the business of humanitarian relief and Azure and Microsoft play an important part in quickly and efficiently serving all of the world. Migration and investment in Azure should be considered as an overall strategy of an organization and communicated companywide.

As a VP i'm not your typical technical person and I'm able to easily use Azure in technical matters so I believe 9 is correct rating.

The only reason I didn't give it a 10 rating as support is expensive.

As I have mentioned before the issue with my Oracle Mismatch Version issues that have put a delay on moving one of my platforms will justify my 7 rating.

Alternatives Considered

The alternatives to EMR are mainly hadoop distributions owned by the 3 companies above. I have not used the other distributions so it is difficult to comment, but the general tradeoff is, at the cost of a longer setup time and more infra management, you get more flexible versioning and potentially faster access to newer versions of some frameworks such as Spark.

We have been one of Microsoft's Azure beta users from the beginning and we worked closely with Microsoft in migration effort. We have used several cloud applications before including Rackspace. Azure's large footprint was the key for us as our applications are SaaS and used worldwide. The ability for me to quickly and easily move servers from West US, to Asia, West Europe, etc.. was very important.

Return on Investment

  • It was easy to set up initial versions of Spark on this
  • Still used as our compute platform as its easy to manage
  • Certain times we forgot to shut down clusters and were overcharged

  • Positive -- Offloading specific ML-related tasks like Azure Machine Learning Studio was great for optimizing our general compute instances infrastructure.
  • Negative -- Difficult to onboard and poor documentation, integrating some of the Azure products took significantly more time than necessary.
  • Positive -- The pricing for some of the Azure products is quite competitive at greater usage.
