Amazon Glacier

As described in the use case, it is perfect for backup data storage where you do not expect to retrieve the data often. Think of it as a data dump; it is nice to know you have a backup, but it actually is expensive and somewhat difficult to retrieve everything.

Google Drive

I think Google Drive is used to the maximum in companies that have several locations nationwide and with a large number of employees. The possibility of communicating and working in the cloud regardless of distances is an important advance from the technological point of view. Honestly, I do not see space where you can not enjoy the service offered by this software. It is ideal for large and small work teams.

Pros

  • Glacier is an inexpensive solution to the problem of storing rarely-accessed data for years.
  • You can configure S3 buckets to transition objects to Glacier with a few clicks.
  • It is easy to get started with Glacier; there is little learning curve and few concepts to familiarize yourself with.

  • Collaboration: Google Drive allows all of us to work together on a live document. We don't have to send threads of emails back and forth or lock ourselves in a conference room to create content.
  • Share Documents: My team is able to easily share documents with everyone else on the team. These documents then live in a "folder" of shared documents that is easy to search. We are also able to manage permissions, allowing others to only view or comment on documents, rather than making changes.
  • Storage: We start out with 30 GBs of storage. That allows for a lot of documents when using the native file format. We have been able to use this space to store and share short video files that we are working on as well as the traditional documents.

Cons

  • Accessing data stored in Glacier is slow. That shouldn't be a surprise, but it is undesirable nonetheless.
  • Retrieving a large amount of data can be expensive; Glacier's intended use is as an archive of rarely-accessed data.
  • Some users regard Glacier with fear and uncertainty. Slow retrieval time and high retrieval cost are the greatest risks of using Glacier, and they are also the Glacier interaction that most users have the least experience with.

  • The best thing about Google drive is the cloud storage and this also happens to be its greatest weakness for without an Internet connection it is of no help at all. You can't back up, you can't share. At that point it's basically useless.

It is difficult to delete the data as you have to wait for inventory and then bucket modification has to expire.

How I have Google Drive installed to my system back up occurs instantly and in the background, if I update a document Google Drive immediately ask if I want to save the updated document and overwrite what I previously stored. This occurs without any prompt from me and that a 10 for me, however, there are times when it does lag a bit however this may be a fault of my Internet service provider and not the Google Drive service.

I give it this rating because I have never had to use Google Drive customer support - which means that I really never run into issues with Google Drive

It's an extremely easy software to implement, once you sign up for a google account you automatically have access to google drive with a set amount of storage space. The business or Google Suite accounts have more storage space than a regular free account, but setting up and accessing google drive is very easy in both cases

Alternatives Considered

It is significantly cheaper than other services, however, it is because it actually is a slightly different service. The other services we've tried allow live reading/writing of data as needed, whereas Glacier is a "cold storage" service. So essentially your choice ends up being based on what you plan to do with your data: keep it indefinitely or retrieve and modify it (potentially often and multiple times).

Dropbox is a great alternative to Google Drive for collaboration and tracking real-time document changes. However, Dropbox only provides 2 GB of free storage space before it starts charging a fee while Google Drive offers 15 GB of free space. Overall Google Drive has all of the storage and collaboration tools I need while allowing me to save on the price.

Return on Investment

  • We seldom need to access our data in Glacier; this means that it is a fraction of the cost of S3, including the infrequent-access storage class.
  • Transitioning data to Glacier is managed by AWS. We don't need our engineers to build or maintain log pipelines.
  • Configuring lifecycle policies for S3 and Glacier is simple; it takes our engineers very little time, and there is little risk of errant configuration.

  • For the organization it is essential to use this tool. We avoid many expenses in nonsense technology.
  • The saving in time and money is evident and for this reason we occupy the budget in other activities.
  • The commercial relations with our suppliers are more fluid and therefore our services increase by a good percentage
