Stripe

The bottom line is the lower rate and return of fees when refunds are issued. These two items alone make working with Stripe a no-brainer. The ease of not having multiple credit card processors for different purchasing portals had made my life and my staff's lives so much easier.

Pros

  • Great API. Makes development a breeze.
  • Solid integrations. Makes setting up apps and portals simpler.
  • Excellent security. Your users can be comforted by the level of protection.

  • Amazingly flexible APIs to support every use case we have come across.
  • Quick customer service, particularly technical and with respect to fees.
  • It feels like they are always a step or two ahead of the capabilities that we need. We have confidence they'll continue to stay ahead of our needs, whihc makes for an ideal partner.
  • They handle and store all of the payment information, so that we have much lower compliance risk.

Cons

  • API documentation examples can be hard to find.
  • A pre-built portal would be a good addition.
  • Low rate of adoption thus far makes self-troubleshooting difficult.

  • I've noticed that the decline rate can sometimes be high due to bank declining the transaction. This is specifically relevant when a customer overseas is trying to sign up. With that being said, it might be on their end, but I'm sure there's something Stripe could do to improve.
  • The support team can be a little slow to get back at times. While I've been pleased overall, there is always room for improvement.
  • I don't have much experience with coding and programming. With that being said, it took some time to learn how the API worked.

Alternatives Considered

The pricing structure can be a bit higher, but the security and integration ability sold it above the rest.

While there are a number of products similar to Stripe, PayPayl was the other one we considered. We ultimately went with Stripe because we found the look and feel of it to be a lot more professional and easy to use than its competitors. It came down to the cleanness, professionalism, and ease of use

Return on Investment

  • ROI in development with less overhead dedicated to payment processing
  • ROI in app support now that solution is scalable
  • Negative impact in offerings, because this solution cannot be changed out for another

  • Positive: Overall I believe we've collected more monthly recurring charges from subscribers.
  • Positive: It's been easier to perform basic customer service tasks like cancelling subscribers quickly or issuing refunds.
  • Negative: Slow impersonal customer service has often sent us panicking during a crisis, and made us turn to hiring web developers to try and resolve issues that were not related to web code - so whatever gains we've made in collections have been negated by costs incurred when trying to compensate for poor customer service.
