Amazon QuickSight

Amazon QuickSight is well suited in any organization that is making business decisions based on performance data whether it be Marketing, Sales, Call Center, etc. It is a great tool especially for mature organizations that have a lot of data to work with. Amazon QuickSight may be not as well suited for newer organizations that are just beginning to drive data/performance metrics. The data available becomes more and more valuable to more that you have.

Bright Gauge

BrightGauge's dashboards are well suited for current, near-live data. We use them to motivate our teams throughout the office and manage the flow of each department's tickets. There is currently not much in the way of trend analysis. You can set up reports to send on a regular basis, but you must manually take that data and plug it into something else like Excel to keep all the data in one place.

Pros

  • Amazon QuickSight is a really easy program to learn how to use.
  • Amazon QuickSight allows our team to customize the data using the various data sets, which makes the available reports incredibly powerful to our organization.
  • Our organization has the ability continually adjust our reports and build new reports as business needs change.
  • Even though our organization has different reports built for different departments, each department can still access and understand reports from across the company.

  • It is a simple and powerful way to visualize data with no SQL experience necessary. The interfaces are largely drag-and-drop and it's easy to put together dashboards, gauges, internal reports, and external reports.
  • BrightGauge's support team is the best I've ever encountered. Their response time is usually within an hour for all my requests, whether they be simple dataset field additions or large scale projects. Every support rep I have worked with has been friendly and beyond helpful.
  • Their blog, webinars, and podcast are full of useful information about metrics, business practices, gauge suggestions, and more.

Cons

  • One of the primary challenges I've had with Amazon QuickSight so far is that some of the reports I want to build use data from different data sets. Instead of being able to put all of the information I want to see into one report.
  • Some of our Amazon QuickSight reports only update every 24 hours. It would be great to see that data in real-time.
  • I would remove the various time zones from Amazon QuickSight and only use the time zone we are in.

  • There are some minor UI features that are missing, particularly when it comes to organizing reports and gauges. The list screens could use more columns and sorting features.
  • When creating complex, multi-layered gauges it is currently not possible to label each layer or rearrange the column order unless you clone, reformat, and delete existing layers. It tends to drop existing layer (column) names and formatting when adding or removing layers, and worse -- sometimes it incorrectly renames layers. The workaround is to keep track of your layers externally (I use Excel or OneNote) and leave the labeling and formatting for the very end.
  • The only way to show trending is to use reports to take snapshots in time of the data you need. Goals can be used for this as well, but it could use much more in the way of tracking historical data.

Alternatives Considered

All of the other reporting platforms my organization has used previously were within our CRM and not a standalone program. In that we were very limited in being able to slice and dice the data the way that we wanted to

BG support is amazing. Connectsmart support is so bad, that's why I changed

Collaboration and Sharing

There are many members across my organization that use the QuickSight reports throughout each business day. There are various reports built for various departments as well as reports that cross over to all departments. There have not been any issues across the various departments with viewing the reports and using unique filters to look at the reports differently. Our IT department is the only department within the organization that has the necessary permissions to create new reports and/or make changes to existing reports

There's really not much there for collaboration, unless you count the fact that you can have a certain number of users with full creation and editing capability.

Data Integration

Amazon QuickSight7.5

All of the data that feeds into Amazon QuickSight comes from our CRM, Clarity. We do not have data coming in from any other sources. Some of the data that comes in is in real-time and some of the data only updates every 24 hours. Overall, the API feed of data seems to be very seamless and there have not been any hiccups in the feed.

Since we get nearly all of our information from ConnectWise Manage it's difficult to answer this question, but so far the only problems we've encountered in merging data from different sources stems from the way the sources themselves store the data. For example, we'd love a gauge that shows closed tickets, the client survey results, and the resources who worked on each ticket. Because Manage stores the ticket number as a number field and Customer Thermometer stores it as a string, it is impossible to cross-reference by ticket number.
