Amazon QuickSight

Amazon QuickSight is well suited in any organization that is making business decisions based on performance data whether it be Marketing, Sales, Call Center, etc. It is a great tool especially for mature organizations that have a lot of data to work with. Amazon QuickSight may be not as well suited for newer organizations that are just beginning to drive data/performance metrics. The data available becomes more and more valuable to more that you have.

Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service

Well suited:Perfect for organizations where they have multiple databases and they have to damp everything in a single tool. This is helpful not only to joint databases together (shipments with POS data for example) but also for employees to learn only ONE tool to get all the data they from different sources.Less appropriate:If you need to go deep into analyzing the data beyond a table. The data visualization properties are pretty limited compared to Tableau/Power BI/Spotfire.

Pros

  • Amazon QuickSight is a really easy program to learn how to use.
  • Amazon QuickSight allows our team to customize the data using the various data sets, which makes the available reports incredibly powerful to our organization.
  • Our organization has the ability continually adjust our reports and build new reports as business needs change.
  • Even though our organization has different reports built for different departments, each department can still access and understand reports from across the company.

  • 1: Data Integration: I love that at Whirlpool we have several different databases in the same place and we can extract and combine data easily.
  • 2: Connection with multiple systems: A lot of companies use Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service, so it means that they are seeing a lot of different use cases and improving the tool constantly.
  • 3: Data extraction: Extracting data is much easier than writing a SQL code. So many different types of users can take advantage of that.

Cons

  • One of the primary challenges I've had with Amazon QuickSight so far is that some of the reports I want to build use data from different data sets. Instead of being able to put all of the information I want to see into one report.
  • Some of our Amazon QuickSight reports only update every 24 hours. It would be great to see that data in real-time.
  • I would remove the various time zones from Amazon QuickSight and only use the time zone we are in.

  • 1: User-friendliness: As I said, you don't need to write a SQL code to extract data, but I've seen some other tools (the previous Oracle Cloud system for example) that were easier than this new one.
  • 2: Speed: The tool is not slow, but when multiple users are trying to query information in the same database, it might get pretty slow. It's very common for people to run queries during the night since it's faster at that period once no one is using the tool
  • 3: Data visualization: The main output is basically a table, if you want to get fancy graphs or other types of output, you might want to export it to Tableau/Power BI/Spotfire.

Alternatives Considered

All of the other reporting platforms my organization has used previously were within our CRM and not a standalone program. In that we were very limited in being able to slice and dice the data the way that we wanted to

Better:Easy integration with different systems (internal, such as SAP; or external, such as data coming from tables from your vendors). Many companies use it and it's a good tool to learn. In my case, I learned at P&G and when I moved to Whirlpool I already learned how to use it! And I use it very often in my role.Worse:Well, if I need to do anything beyond a table, line or bar chart, I export the data and use a different tool.

Collaboration and Sharing

There are many members across my organization that use the QuickSight reports throughout each business day. There are various reports built for various departments as well as reports that cross over to all departments. There have not been any issues across the various departments with viewing the reports and using unique filters to look at the reports differently. Our IT department is the only department within the organization that has the necessary permissions to create new reports and/or make changes to existing reports

I liked the fact that you can set up reports to be sent out on a daily basis. I was able to automate a few reports and save tens of thousands of dollars in third-party labor by creating automated Oracle Business Intelligence reports. You can also save and share your reports pretty easily - but it feels like an old type of software.

Data Integration

All of the data that feeds into Amazon QuickSight comes from our CRM, Clarity. We do not have data coming in from any other sources. Some of the data that comes in is in real-time and some of the data only updates every 24 hours. Overall, the API feed of data seems to be very seamless and there have not been any hiccups in the feed.

As I said before, Whirlpool connects a lot of different sources to Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service. I was surprised! It seems that 80%+ of the data I need is seating on this platform. I'm not sure how easy it is to set up to different data sources, I remember that at P&G they were struggling with it.
