Amazon QuickSight

Amazon QuickSight is well suited in any organization that is making business decisions based on performance data whether it be Marketing, Sales, Call Center, etc. It is a great tool especially for mature organizations that have a lot of data to work with. Amazon QuickSight may be not as well suited for newer organizations that are just beginning to drive data/performance metrics. The data available becomes more and more valuable to more that you have.

Tableau Online

Tableau is really useful for merchandising the website and homepage. If I have no clue what to feature, I can easily open the software and search which categories or items are performing the highest and also make sure I have enough inventory to support it. I guess it would be less helpful if I were searching a specific item because I would have to do a lot of filtering since there is no search capability.

Pros

  • Amazon QuickSight is a really easy program to learn how to use.
  • Amazon QuickSight allows our team to customize the data using the various data sets, which makes the available reports incredibly powerful to our organization.
  • Our organization has the ability continually adjust our reports and build new reports as business needs change.
  • Even though our organization has different reports built for different departments, each department can still access and understand reports from across the company.

  • Data visualization is bar none the best feature on Tableau.
  • The ability to drag and drop and ease of use to slice the data into different views.
  • Being a dashboard tool in a more intuitive and more stable than an Excel based dashboard.

Cons

  • One of the primary challenges I've had with Amazon QuickSight so far is that some of the reports I want to build use data from different data sets. Instead of being able to put all of the information I want to see into one report.
  • Some of our Amazon QuickSight reports only update every 24 hours. It would be great to see that data in real-time.
  • I would remove the various time zones from Amazon QuickSight and only use the time zone we are in.

  • While user intuitive, that is really only true for those with data analysis and BI experience. This is still a tool for experienced data crunchers and not something I would unleash to many in my organization.
  • Still requires business intelligence consumers to be specific in their requests for data in dashboards, so it still requires the touch point between the data and the user, it requires someone with some know-how, to be in the middle. So it is still not democratizing our organizational data.

Alternatives Considered

All of the other reporting platforms my organization has used previously were within our CRM and not a standalone program. In that we were very limited in being able to slice and dice the data the way that we wanted to

I feel like Tableau is easier to use compared with the SAP Business Objects. Both have a bit of a learning curve but I felt that Tableau Online was still more intuitive and user friendly. Tableau Desktop is a powerhouse. It has a very steep learning curve but once you master the fundamentals the sky is the limit.

Collaboration and Sharing

There are many members across my organization that use the QuickSight reports throughout each business day. There are various reports built for various departments as well as reports that cross over to all departments. There have not been any issues across the various departments with viewing the reports and using unique filters to look at the reports differently. Our IT department is the only department within the organization that has the necessary permissions to create new reports and/or make changes to existing reports

What I've found, when I need to get the details and share them, is that I have to download the image, then put it into a PDF or other format, to then share. I know that there is the embed feature, but that doesn't help much when trying to provide quick information, that's confidential, to the management team that doesn't have always have a login to Tableau Online, but they need the information that I'm providing.

Data Integration

Amazon QuickSight7.5
Based on 2 answers
All of the data that feeds into Amazon QuickSight comes from our CRM, Clarity. We do not have data coming in from any other sources. Some of the data that comes in is in real-time and some of the data only updates every 24 hours. Overall, the API feed of data seems to be very seamless and there have not been any hiccups in the feed.

We are using direct integration with our data warehouse - Treasure Data. While there is a native integration, it's not as intuitive as most would like. When wanting to pass data to Tableau Online, the requirement is to output a query of data, which is good, but it's not always complete. It is nice, however, to be able to directly connect to a SQL, MySQL or online spreadsheet to have realtime data updated.
