Amazon RDS

Amazon Relational Database Service is great when you need a Database solution that can work for you very fast. It is also a great solution when you need a system that can scale to handle very large amounts of data. You can get set up with a complex, large database eco-system in minutes/hours, and have the best security and backups scheduled. The alternative to doing this would typically be hiring one or more very experienced database professionals for not just the implementation, but also on staff to handle the periodic maintenance necessary.

Apache Hive

This is best suited for data analysts and scientists, it's not a programmers tool. You may still need an RDBMS to read data from as updates and deletes can get a bit more complicated, you can run batch jobs, this will have to be facilitated by additional tools. Its good for fast query processing, for storing large amounts of data.

Pros

  • Multiple availability zones for high assurance of uptime
  • Both hosted and local management/reporting utilities
  • Integration with CloudWatch and CloudFormation for automated creation and real-time performance metrics

  • Hive syntax is almost like SQL, so for someone already familiar with SQL it takes almost no effort to pick up Hive.
  • To be able to run map reduce jobs using json parsing and generate dynamic partitions in parquet file format.
  • Simplifies your experience with Hadoop especially for non-technical/coding partners.

Cons

  • Postgres, in particular, is configured in such a way as to prevent access to the `postgres` user. Considering things like database extensions are installed under this user, if extensions ever need to be removed/modified, you have to rebuild and migrate your entire database!
  • Cross-system database migrations are somewhat slow and, in many cases, require a great deal of manual work to ensure data type information (i.e. UUIDs or Integers) is properly set-post migration (otherwise many types are re-cast to strings).

  • Hive doesn't support many features that traditional RDBMS SQL has; so it may not be an easier transformation as one would presume.
  • Being OpenSource, it has its share of problems and lack of support; need to explore community groups to get some clarifications if you are not using any of the big distribution providers like Cloudera or HW.
  • Hive is comparatively slower than its competitors. It's easy to use but that comes with the cost of processing. If you are using it just for batch processing then Hive is well and fine.

Hive's support SQL like queries improves its usability since almost every potential user of Hive would have had experience with SQL.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Relational Database Service manages MariaDB and MySQL, so if you need to use those databases, then Amazon Relational Database Service will manage everything from the installation to the incremental updates needed for operation. Not having to worry about maintaining a database cluster has saved countless hours and stress, allowing more development in revenue generating areas of our company

Presto is slightly less reliable but much faster for interactive querying. These tools would not be replacements for each other, but rather complements.

  • Removes need for support
  • Allows existing applications use the same DB technology
  • Integrated into AWS VPC already
