Redshift RDS - Data Lakes and Data Warehouses
Aurora RDS - nice alternative to mySQL or Postgres, but skill the performance and features of those other engines
DynamoDB RDS - scalability and flexibility like other no-SQL database

SAP HANA Express Edition

For huge data set with some fuzzy uncommon and unusual search kind of features is less appropriate like in many places for finance related stuff from the developer point of view. Its very well suited to create a POC for demo purpose even though for production use purpose, the coding with HANA is really fast and quick resulting turn with an expected format

Pros

  • Getting the data in and out of our databases, especially with the close integration RDS has with S3 buckets.
  • Less overall management of the database servers. Our DBAs are now do more DBA work than server admin work, which moves them higher on the value chain.
  • Performance and Scalability.

  • The best part I would recommend is the real-time analytic reports
  • As compare to traditional DBs, this edition is tremendous faster, easier, quick to learn
  • Very good for our data load in few of the traditional DBs, with which we use our SAP Lumira, Web IDE, Also its flexible to integrate with 3rd party software like Tableau
  • Personally, I like the best part is can load on our personal laptop, desktop with no special appliance restriction like most HANA DBs does, easy to setup and quick in resulting in real-time results.

Cons

  • We have at times dealt with a few latency issues between RDS and our server instances even when they are in the same zone. This isn't a big deal if you're appropriately caching, but if you were to run a CMS, say Drupal, without caching on RDS from an EC2 instance it could be quite a bit slower than using a single box.
  • Occasionally Amazon will depreciate a particular version and you are forced to "do some work" to migrate your database in a time period you may not have anticipated. Not sure there is any way around this for anybody, but it's a thing to think about.

  • I would be more than happy if normal users like me which work on test data can get the system of min 64GB at no charge.. :)
  • One of feature I would like to behave with it is smart data integration,

Alternatives Considered

Initially, we planned to move everything to Dynamo DB, however, we had our initial architecture with MySQL, so we thought it would be a good option to migrate and use AWS RDS which seemed to be a good idea actually. I feel the security and the placing it in a VPC, is one advantage over the other products.

HANA Express Edition will always sticks up against above traditional DB due to its tremendous features like, real-time, in-memory column store DB, predictive analytics, graphical features, integration with 3rd party tools, best analytics, quick and easy setup, more advance DW features, with compress kind of DB, and many more which are not available easily with above listed DBs with

Return on Investment

  • Provides you with six familiar database engines to choose from, including Amazon Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Easily migrates or replicates your existing databases to Amazon RDS.
  • It frees you to focus on your applications so you can give them the fast performance, high availability, security and compatibility they need.

  • Data Analysts are able to complete their analysis much faster (4 hours vs 4 - 5 days)
  • Resource intensive summarization processes could be decommissioned as the data can be stored at the lowest grain. This saves on resource/licensing costs and gives the business near real-time access to their data.
