Amazon S3

Wherever you need to store things, S3 is pretty much the answer. Also, if you want to host simple websites without the cost or headache of scaling your own services, the static web hosting may be the answer you're looking for.

Clarify before hand any additional charges for remote hand and arrangement/SLA for remote hand. Negotiate well on these terms as they tend to be more flexible around this. Clarify shipping and handling charges if any.

Pros

  • Storage! You can store as much as you like in whatever format and structure you like.
  • Pay as you go - you only pay for what you use, so your storage costs scale up and down with your storage and access patterns. No more having to provision space ahead of time or having wasted space floating around. It's also fairly inexpensive.
  • Static website hosting - really simple and easy to get going with, but surprisingly powerful. You can do everything from simple static websites to full Single Page Applications (assuming its all Javascript).

  • Remote hand services often pretty responsive and good follow through
  • Shipping and handling was never an issue at Navisite facility for our hardware orders
  • Managed services were also very competent to address issues within short amount of time

Cons

  • There is no true hierarchical filesystem in S3. So for example, if you have a file like /images/pizza/1.png, and you delete 1.png it deletes the entire directory structure. Now many tools will place an empty dummy file at /images/pizza to make it appear as if the structure is there – but if you do these operations via api it can be a bit of a gotchya.
  • The bucket namespace is global, so it can be really hard to get a sensible bucket name. Honestly no idea why they made that global.
  • While you can serve S3 content at your own subdomain, you have to have the proper bucket name to do so and this can get pretty cumbersome. Ideally, there would be a better way to mask S3 buckets at a DNS level.

  • San Jose facility power outage caused damage to company's credibility, this should not occur again being 7x24 facility and backup generator
  • Avoiding too many management changes will help create good connection with individuals for sustained harmony

Alternatives Considered

In terms of AWS services, S3 is the best storage solution offered that gives us security and reliability with a wide, even if it is too wide at times, array of services making it a cost effective solution. However, when compared to other large cloud providers, such as Google & Azure, the selection process and benefits become harder to define as benefits are realized on a per-project basis. S3 is definitely a solid choice, due to the partnerships with EMC and branding, but the over abundant additional services, while nice, makes the service feel a bit pieced together, and not stable, compared to other services designed more as pure storage containers, such as Google Cloud Storage, which has already been proven as a reliable service by the millions of customers utilizing Google Cloud Drive.

Return on Investment

  • The data we store in AWS S3 is shared with lot of other AWS account users and the requester pays for the data transfer and we need not worry about the costs to move our data to other accounts.
  • The data in AWS S3 acts as a centralized storage system where in most of our web, mobile and platform API's and applications access the same data without the need to replicate it and with very low latencies.
  • Our algorithm models have been evolved and are at a better place now as the training models have been prepared on the data in S3.
