Amazon SES

Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) shines if you just want to send bulk mail and you do not want to pay any monthly fees for the software that you won't use. You pay exactly for what you use -- to send emails. Amazon SES is extremely reliable, I haven't seen any bounces that were on their end.Speaking about features that are lacking; if you do not have software to send and track all the subscriptions, you may want to look into services that have that implemented already. Personally, I'm using Amazon SES as my SMTP server and Sendy to track all the subscriptions, statistics, reports and all the other features. The price difference between putting several products together and using all-in-one product is huge. Therefore, hands down to Amazon SES for [being] such a great product.

SendGrid Marketing Email

SendGrid, in our world, has been best suited for delivering emails to our candidates at a fairly quick rate. This along with providing us insights as to the performance has been very helpful. On the B2B side, we have not found it to be as appropriate mainly because we tend to want to hit those people in a different way and the stats around those are different.

Pros

  • Low cost; I do not know anyone that can match their low cost unless you are in the free tier of G-Suite for work Gmail.
  • High reliability - messages do get delivered. We have had no issues.
  • Easy to set up the basics - generate the credentials and add it to your code.

  • Ease of Use - SendGrid is really very easy to use, from creation of emails to the actual delivery. This is helpful because in instances where our marketing team members are busy with other projects, an admin like myself can easily come in to assist.
  • Statistics - The reporting functionality is great for us too as it gives us insight as to performance of our emails which helps greatly in optimizing.
  • Customer Service - The SendGrid team has always been helpful with regards to best practices, new products coming out and answering any questions that we may have.

Cons

  • It could be more user-friendly for non-tech-savvy people.
  • I've praised that it does not have any unnecessary features. However, some people could use implemented tools.
  • Initial limit is too low but you can lift it with no issues.

  • The unsubscribing and cleaning the lists is a pain. You need to use a special tool to collect all your bounced, reported, unsubscribed, blocked, and invalid emails and then you create a separate list with them to delete it (along with all the emails that match the ones in the list)... Can we make it a bit simpler?
  • When you're creating/editing a marketing email, if you get into HTML code, it ceases to be a nice text WYSIWYG block and instead, you have to edit it ONLY in HTML from now on :( If I want to clear the trash in the code, it doesn't mean I want to switch to code-only.
  • Perhaps it's Chrome, but the layout is buggy. For example, when I edit a marketing email and I scroll down the email, the part of the screen that has the tools for editing the text is covered by the text of my email.

It has the potential to be really cool. However, it feels as if it was created by developers for developers (and I work with developers, yet even for me the instrument was somewhat not easy to use - just read SendGrid's help manuals...) However, if you are into data and your way of thinking is more mathematical rather than lyrical, you'll enjoy this instrument

I've reached out to SendGrid support few times. Each time my issue was able to be resolved by the first rep that responded and was solved within 24 hours (if not 1 hour).

Alternatives Considered

I'd recommend SendGrid and MailChimp to most smaller business that can't dedicate engineers solely to their email pipeline. The price/value ration is fair and the tools are fairly flexible for the intended use cases. It's often a good idea to start to start there and only pivot later when needed.

SendGrid stands apart from all other email marketing tools. MailChimp and Constant Contact have proved to be a costly and poorly managed service that creates more headaches for our team than it does help us achieve our goals. We made the switch to SendGrid a few years ago now and haven't looked back

Return on Investment

  • Our cost of sending emails is negligible.
  • We have very high confidence in our email delivery.
  • The speed of sending is awesome. We have sent out thousands of emails in minutes - once we sent out mail as a shout out to dormant users- and it worked very well.

  • Positive ROI in terms of reaching contacts and scheduling meetings to fill our pipeline
