Likelihood to Recommend

Amazon SES

While most companies can get away with stock or lightly modified SaaS solutions, if email is absolutely core to your business, I'd recommend Amazon's Simple Email Service. It provides the lowest pricing outside of building up your own sender reputation, while providing the same flexibility and performance, especially if your application servers are already in AWS.
The drawback to all this power is that you need to dedicate engineering resources to building, modifying, and maintaining your email pipeline. If you can't justify those expenses, go with a SaaS product.

SendGrid Transactional Email

If you do not mind the lack of some historic data for your website and need something that is cost effective, then SendGrid is right for you. Keeping in mind how cheap this service really is, the pros outweigh the cons up to a certain limit. However if having historic data, better reporting and visibility on content of past emails is important to you, then go for something else (albeit a tad more expensive). That's the compromise that you'll have to decide on.

Pros

  • Very high send rates. We often send out over 50,000 emails in a matter of minutes (30-40 minutes).
  • Very simple to authorize email sending from an entire domain.
  • You get full control of your emails and are not as strictly bound to a set of policies as you would be with an email "platform" like MailChimp. Of course, that means you have to do more legwork too.

  • SendGrid sends emails on time.
  • Has email send reporting.
  • Lets you customize your emails.

Cons

  • You cannot send embedded images (Base64 encoded) in your emails. This is a pretty big gotcha. So if you want to send images along, it's best to store them externally.
  • Virtually zero analytics on your emails. It is up to you to implement open detection, click detection etc.
  • Has no email list storage. That's up to you.

  • No real-time chat support available.
  • Documentation can be convoluted in some cases, making it challenging to understand what the REST API is expecting and what the engineer should expect as a response.
  • E-mail based response times typically ~24 hours. Faster responses may be available for higher pay tiers.

Alternatives Considered

SES is a much lower level technical tool than the other solutions we've used in the past with the exception of Mailgun. We've found SES to actually be much easier to use than Mailgun, although not as powerful. A good way to explain the difference between MailChimp, Constant Contact, or Campaign Monitor and SES is that you could literally create those other services using SES. For all I know, they might use SES as their sending agent, while their value add is email lists, HTML composition, and subscribe forms.

SendGrid was used only because it worked well with the user database that was created. I did not choose it. I never liked it. I think Constant Contact and MailChimp are by far the better email services.

Return on Investment

  • We've been able to quickly implement mailchimp-like email sending into our products (our customer can send mass emails to their constituents) at a fraction of the cost of more robust services like mailchimp, all while making our product look more professional.
  • Our services that leverage SES are entirely white labeled, which increases customer confidence.

  • ROI? Email is crucial for many online businesses and websites, including mine, and SendGrid handles my email needs without much fuss. So definitely a positive impact.
