Likelihood to Recommend

Amazon SES

While most companies can get away with stock or lightly modified SaaS solutions, if email is absolutely core to your business, I'd recommend Amazon's Simple Email Service. It provides the lowest pricing outside of building up your own sender reputation, while providing the same flexibility and performance, especially if your application servers are already in AWS.
The drawback to all this power is that you need to dedicate engineering resources to building, modifying, and maintaining your email pipeline. If you can't justify those expenses, go with a SaaS product.

Twilio SendGrid Email API

SendGrid Email API, I feel, is well suited for tech companies with smaller teams. I feel as if with a larger team of programmers, designers, etc. you may have better results with a competitor and coding things yourself. But for fast moving startups with quick implementation, nothing beats Twilio + SendGrid in those regards.

Pros

Amazon SES

  • Very high send rates. We often send out over 50,000 emails in a matter of minutes (30-40 minutes).
  • Very simple to authorize email sending from an entire domain.
  • You get full control of your emails and are not as strictly bound to a set of policies as you would be with an email "platform" like MailChimp. Of course, that means you have to do more legwork too.

  • It has a very clean and easy-to-use user interface.
  • Its email deliver ability is quite fast and spam free.

Cons

Amazon SES

  • You cannot send embedded images (Base64 encoded) in your emails. This is a pretty big gotcha. So if you want to send images along, it's best to store them externally.
  • Virtually zero analytics on your emails. It is up to you to implement open detection, click detection etc.
  • Has no email list storage. That's up to you.

Twilio SendGrid Email API

  • SendGrid's template builder could still use some additional features that other email marketing services provide.
  • SendGrid should make the "tracking global unsubscribe" formattable so that it doesn't just align to the left.
  • SendGrid sometimes glitches and logs us out in-session.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon SES

Amazon SES is bare-bones, insofar as it will not "help" you with the contents of your message. You cannot use variables in the e-mail, it will not automatically track whether or not the recipient opened the mail or not, it will not help with unsubscribe links, and it will not generate and manage web-based copies of the e-mail. That said, it gives the developer full control of the messages.Pricing, again, is the killer feature here. SES is cheaper than every single e-mail delivery provider I have ever encountered.

Twilio SendGrid Email API

I tried EmailKitchen for sometimes before using SendGrid. That was also a good tool but the spam rate of that tool was quite high. I didn't like the high spam rate of that tool so I switched to SendGrid. I got highly impressed with SendGrid's deliverability with almost zero spam.

Return on Investment

Amazon SES

  • All positive things. The fact that we can send tens of thousands of e-mails per month for less than $5 is incredible. Find a better price for something even remotely as high-quality as SES.
  • SES provides a set-and-forget way of handling e-mail. Drop in the credentials, and your developers will never have to mess with it again.

Twilio SendGrid Email API

  • Collecting data via emails save a lot of money compared to collecting data by reaching out to people physically.
  • It also helps us to increase our list size substantially in less time.
  • We can reach out to new people via reference technique.
