Amazon SNS

It is well suited for generic push notification requirements. It can be quickly created and modified to best suit your application at any given moment. However for any notification service that needs to be highly customizable for a specific deployment should be implemented through a competing or custom built service run on company servers

If you have a large or small blog following/audience, this is an excellent tool to help keep readers engaged and on top of your new content releases. You can also utilize this product for automated DRIP campaigns that will, following a schedule you create, notify users at preset intervals to help nurture your leads or existing customers as part of your sales funnel. Even new bloggers with smaller audiences can utilize a tool like this to help generate more consistent web traffic to your content. I am averaging a +16% clickthrough rate regularly on my RSS to push notifications after just a few months of use.

Cons

Amazon SNS

  • Testing on different environments was a challenge to setup. Unclear how it's really supposed to work.
  • Mobile device tokens get disabled easily during testing making the push notification testing process fail silently.
  • SMS Delivery setup procedures not as straightforward.

  • Would've liked more options for the two-step opt-in or "soft push" UI. We ended up not using it due to the extra work it would've taken to get it to look and work the way we wanted from a design/UX perspective
  • The billing system isn't inside the admin interface, which led to some confusion when we were switching administrators
  • Built in workflow for setting up multi-lingual sites would be a boon to companies marketing in more than one language

I never accessed support, but I did use the help files to get the service implemented and they were helpful and informative enough that I did not need to use individual support for any purposes. My rating therefore is kind of in the "indifferent" scale only because I did not use it at all.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon SNS

Many products, including PagerDuty, can be used to notify stakeholders when alarms are triggered. SNS is only suitable for non-emergency email alerts, and integration with CloudWatch is its only advantage. If you want to be notified of an issue by email, SNS can be configured in seconds. It is not suitable for any of PagerDuty's other use-cases.As a pub/sub system, SNS is somewhat similar to Apache Kafka. Queues may be suitable for some use-cases; Amazon SQS may be appropriate in these cases.

Return on Investment

Amazon SNS

  • It has helped our team to be alerted quickly to undesirable changes in our AWS environment so that immediate action can be taken. Hence it has saved us a lot of time and money due to quick action.

PushCrew

  • Unfortunately a negative return on investment.
