Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

If you are going to deploy within AWS, you need to know how to leverage VPCs. VPCs have several items you must configure for them to be usable and to even link one VPC to another. If you are only going to deploy a few resources or use some of the default configurations, you still need to have working knowledge of how a VPC functions. If you are used to working with VLANs and the ideology behind those, that is the best direct reference to how a VPC can be described, but with additional layers on top of that with route tables, internet gateways, etc.

Azure NetApp Files

In my opinion, I would say it is more suitable to huge workloads, where you really needs the reliability and performance that a Netapp storage provides to you, larger share sizes, etc. Use cases where you really needs to store large amounts of non-structured data.It is not a cheap solution, I mean, you can find other options to store your data on the Cloud at smaller prices. So, for small companies, or companies that depends mostly on web-applications, or don't have such a specific requirements, I would not go with Azure Netapp Files.

  • Protection of resources based on how roles/access should be allocated.
  • Easy to allocate network CIDR block and split up as needed for IP subnets within the VPC.
  • Used to create public and private networks within the VPC.

Azure NetApp Files

  • We have found that it scales very well. In some cases we had a large existing storage infrastructure and were able to migrate it while other times we started from scratch with low storage demands and Azure NetApp Files fit the bill each time.
  • We have been impressed with the replication capabailities.
  • The read and write speed when interacting with files is a major asset.

  • The biggest issue with VPC networks is knowing how you can leverage VPC endpoints to ensure your resources within the VPC are not reaching out over the Internet to get to AWS services such as S3 and others.

Azure NetApp Files

  • It does not support file locking although its available as an add-on
  • Design is far from native and has a learning curve
  • We would like to have backup functionality built in so that we don't run into the issue where the replication process makes a copy of the corrupted data.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

We utilize both AWS and Azure resources for our cloud deployments. The deployment of resources initially was smoother through AWS VPC due to their powerful CLI and Powershell cmdlets. In the past couple of years, the differences between some of the features of AWS VPC and Azure Vnet have diminished. However, the ease of putting things together in a logical flow still belongs in my opinion to AWS.

Azure NetApp Files is very well integrated with Microsoft Azure, we use the same request methods that everyone knows from Azure. NetApp and Microsoft has built a very efficient solution that allows you to transfer virtually any service to the Microsoft public cloud. Azure NetApp Files also protects our data very well.

  • AWS VPCs are actively used for following various compliance and regulatory needs such as network separation for PCI DSS. The ability to keep resources and access to those resources controlled through the initial steps of creating VPCs has helped tremendously.

  • Positive impact includes getting high performance when working with huge volumes of data along with low latency.
  • Did not encounter any negative impact as such except that it is comparatively costly than similar other services, but then it is tradeoff price vs performance.
