More suited I will say deploying your Web-server, Running some cloud applications, Deploying your micro-services, Managed database. Less suited is really hard to say but there can be some scenario where you can use free services like Google spreadsheet scripting for smaller data management and small workflows. Workflow automation is something you need multiple vendors to talk to each other at that time its preferred to go for something else.

Db2 Warehouse on Cloud

Db2 is not a solution that I recommend. We have a lot of experience and we are not satisfied with the product or the support that we received. Because of the way our environment works, serving branches, it becomes a challenge to satisfy the customers or users.

  • You can size dashDB to your current needs and expand its capability later on as the needed.
  • I like the way dashDB allow for connecting to the cloud that my network engineer to set things up quickly.
  • IBM dashDB's ability to store and provide fast access to data both on-premise and in the cloud makes it a real winner for me.

Cons

Amazon Web Services

  • If there is one thing I think AWS needs improvement on, it is the administration dashboard. It can be a nightmare to use especially when trying to access billing. This could be made better, honestly, as there should be a simplified way to access simple admin features.
  • While AWS was fairly easy to integrate into our solutions, it is not as easy to use without some IT knowledge. The dashboards are complicated and designed for someone who is computer savvy. If you are just want to keep track of billing, for example, you may need to take a course or spend a few hours with someone being walked through the admin console.
  • AWS does tend to be slow at times. If you do not have a fast internet connection, it can take time to access services that are hosted on AWS. This is not always the case but we have had clients complain about this if they are trying to access a service from multiple points (IP addresses). The only real fix we found was to make our files cache to another server and only keep current data accessible to clients.

Db2 Warehouse on Cloud

  • We have been facing some challenges with Db2 when scaling up the operations in terms of availability. It becomes a single point of failure and it pollutes the whole system, leaving us challenges in serving the traffic. This is the reason that we are considering migrating to Oracle.
  • Scalability has been a problem area. We have traffic on the order of gigabytes per second and it impacts our queries and responses a lot. Considering the volume that we have, it manifests itself into a multitude of issues.
  • We have dealt with technical support on several occasions. Whenever we run into issues, the specialist team is involved and the resolution cycle is stretched. We have to rely on make-shift solutions and the issues keep recurring. Ultimately, the product itself has challenges and we are not currently satisfied with the support, either.

We are almost entirely satisfied with the service. In order to move off it, we'd have to build for ourselves many of the services that AWS provides and the cost would be prohibitive. Although there are cost savings and security benefits to returning to the colo facility, we could never afford to do it, and we'd hate to give up the innovation and constant cycle of new features that AWS gives us.

We find it quite easy to use. The only challenge is at the outset figuring out exactly what you need, given the large number of available services and options which could take a bit of time to get familiarised with and to decide on.

Performance

Amazon Web Services

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Amazon Web Services boasts a really quick and helpful support with multiple communication options as well. For instance, on my personal account I incurred a minor charge due to mismanagement of a service. Upon contacting support, they quickly explained the issue to me and upon request waived the bill as a first time error.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services is well suited when we have a huge amount of data to store, process, manipulate and get meaningful information out of. It is also suitable when we need very fast data retrieval from the database. They provide a superior product at a fair price which allows us to further our goals and push the limits of what we are capable of as a team / company.

IBM dashDB stacks up well against both on-premise (SQL Server and DB2), but it was a tough choice to go with over AzureDB. Ultimately, the deep discount by IBM led us to go with dashDB with the understanding that we could back out of the technology at a later date.

Return on Investment

Amazon Web Services

  • AWS has lowered our employee cost, because you don't have to hire Network/Server Admins to manage infrastructure.
  • Increased productivity by incorporating Continuous Integration with AWS and our development life cycle.
  • Increased customer confidence by being able to provide HIPAA level security in our development and production environments
