  • The AWS forums are well monitored and very helpful - go there first if you get stuck and you'll get long, detailed answers from AWS representatives who will follow the conversation and come back for follow-up questions.
  • AWS is tight-lipped about roadmaps until your bill reaches a certain size (for us, 2 years ago, it was at about $50K/mo that we started getting access to the people who really knew what was going on.)

OutSystems

OutSystems is extremely well suited where you require a fast time to market combined with a robust deployment process. It also provides enterprise grade redundancy and vertical scalability with SLA’s approaching those available with any other tier 1 application. OutSystems is not well suited for small scale or “cheap” application due to it’s high “per object” licensing costs and minimum license fees.

Cons

  • It's such a well conceived service, I can't think of anything that's missing in functionality for our HC company. What we ask of AWS is to be so reliable, so customer-focused and so fast that we can just do what we do best, and forget about their job in our success.
  • Healthcare: Since this is our core market, we're very interested in watching this vertical evolve and Amazon's vision for it. We'd value more insights and collaboration with Bezos on what our vision is too.

  • Because OutSystems is growing so quickly it can be hard to get business questions, (contract issues, availability date), answered quickly.
  • It is sometimes difficult to find employees with OutSystems product experience.

This is the only hosting solution I am using and I am not gonna look for any other because I am used to it and it meets my requirements: easy to use without compromising on control I have over my infrastructure. Also, I do live variety of AWS services.

The management console is the weak part of the service in my experience. It is adequate but slow.

Performance

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Alternatives Considered

We looked at Microsoft 365 Business because it's so popular. It's ease of use seemed attractive but it didn't have the agility or scalability we found in AWS. IBM Analytics Engine was far more complex than we needed and very expensive. AWS is an operations tool for us so the reporting we get for the quality of service we wanted, is perfect as is.

I tried to use WordPress with some success. Also looked at Joomla. But when I saw OutSystems I knew I had been wasting my time there. It takes you longer to get going with OutSystems - but even I as a novice realized immediately that Outsystems is simply in another league. Outsystems is powerful. (Can you compare WordPress and Joomla to Outsystems - I don't think so).

Return on Investment

  • Profitability: We've a team of very hands-on engineers and what they would need to build what we now get from AWS, would not have had the level of profitability we get with AWS. At first, our inhouse team really wanted this work inhouse. Now, they're very grateful it's not. Billing is always accurate and automated with full justification in every report. We can plan our growth far more accurately.
  • Flexibility: We can onboard new customers in an instant. We can give greater service levels to our current customers, just as quickly and dynamically too, if their needs change.
  • Ease of use: seriously, one or two phone calls is pretty much all we've ever had to make when our needs change and it's been that easy for the last 4 or 5 years now.

  • The ease of use of the OutSystems development process has been the biggest ROI for us. We have developed our Framework product and maintained/enhanced it with only 4 workers.
  • OutSystems has enhanced their product very significantly over the last 4 years. They have gone from a simple to use tool to a very simple to use sophisticated tool that covers the standard mainframe-based computing apps and the apps used on handheld mobile devices all using the same basic set of development tools.
