AWS is like the IBM of cloud infrastructure. It's hard to really go wrong with it. If you do, it's probably your own fault.

RapidMiner Studio

RapidMiner Studio is a great starting point if you want your organization to try and start using data science or statistics. It is easy to use and self explanatory. It also has some great built in algorithms. The Recommendations feature using crowd sourcing is amazing, and will guide with next steps in the process. It is more suitable for smaller data sets. We haven't tried with larger data sets yet, so try it beforehand if you want to use large data on it.

Pros

  • Cost: AWS's free tier enables developers to try out the service with no commitment. The resiliency of the AWS infrastructure is a great value-add.
  • Ubiquity: AWS networks have the availability and elasticity which not only meet the needs of developers, but also end users.
  • AWS is an E2E solution for deploying, managing, and continuously integrating software development.

  • No need to script anything, and still doing modeling is amazing
  • Easy to use by just dragging and dropping operators
  • Can use the tool for data cleaning, data analysis, data modeling

Cons

  • AWS needs to improve their java-based browser SSH client. Both Azure and Google Cloud Platform far exceed AWS in this regard.
  • AWS lacks the ability to SSH from windows at this time without extensive modifications to the operating system.
  • AWS needs a trial period to demo paid features within a free tier window, not locked out of premium services.

  • Wish the tool was more efficient in terms of processing power. The tool takes a lot of CPU processing power, even for a small process on a small data set
  • Wish there were more options on charts and graphs to visualize the data

This is the only hosting solution I am using and I am not gonna look for any other because I am used to it and it meets my requirements: easy to use without compromising on control I have over my infrastructure. Also, I do live variety of AWS services.

The management console is the weak part of the service in my experience. It is adequate but slow.

Performance

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Alternatives Considered

Azure is the other product that we have used for some of our clients. In certain places Azure was very competitively priced and clients chose to go with Azure as a platform. Billing by the minute is definitely a competitive advantage in certain cases. AWS pricing structures took some time for me to understand but it worked out well in the end.

Used R and RapidMiner Studio. The main advantage for RapidMiner Studio is the reduced need to program. It has a much smaller learning curve, and it is easy to start using the tool and analyzing from day one.

Return on Investment

  • Some campaigns needed dynamic scaling and setting up a massive infrastructure to meet the demands would have been impossible if it was not for the AWS services that we used. The traffic volume was enormous and AWS did an awesome job within the budgets we had in mind.

  • Thanks to the patters that RapidMiner has detected, we have been able to follow clues in the right direction, both for the Protein Interaction Network Analysis and for the Epilepsy Research
  • Students and participants of the machine learning workshops have learned about this technology and about the tool
