Amazon WorkSpaces (VDI)

With a substantial free tier, AWS is a solution for fast, reliable and secure access to tools and workflows for any project. AWS is still the most intimidating cloud solution to approach. While there is no shortage to power and solutions, it is not for the faint of heart. It is easy to get lost while using AWS though the solution is there. Amazon WorkSpaces (VDI) requires an IT manager with experience deploying applications and building databases. Comparably, Parallels is a much easier UI to navigate, along with many open source and free options.

Oracle VDI

Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is well suited in environments where one wants to centrally manage all the users data on capable servers. These servers could be located in a highly secure premises protecting it from ransomware attacks and highly guarded and maintained round the clock by highly experienced server administrators and security experts. This way Oracle Virtual Desktop infrastructure avoids managing and installing anti-ransomware softwares on each and every clients' computers.

Oracle VDI

  • In our use of Oracle VDI, we have found there is a significant lag time when using the desktop environments through it, rather than the standalone virtual desktops.
  • Real time reporting and statistics can be improved as well.

Oracle VDI was my first foray into the Virtual Infrastructure world, and I thought it was great. Even though it had bugs and freezes, from the way I was having to do the same job in the past, it was great for me. However, when I tried VMware and was not getting the frequent freeze ups, I realized that I could have been more productive a lot sooner.

Oracle VDI does an amazing job in reducing the complexity of managing multiple virtual desktop environments. However, it does impact the speed and performance in comparison to standalone machine access. We do not have precise metrics to compare performance but it is noticeable.

AWS support in general is pretty good, and WorkSpaces is no exception. We haven't had too much need for support but on the occasion we have, they've been quick to respond and helpful. Our issues have been resolved rapidly.

Cisco AnyConnect is a VPN client and using a VPN can reduce the internet speed. It is not quite reliable as workspaces. Cisco AnyConnect is not at all optimised for linux machines. They suffer a lot from crashing and loss of internet speed. Workspaces works quite well even on linux machines

Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure compares well and holds it ground well. Creating and spawning new virtual machines is a breeze in Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is what you like the most. The other advantage to the users of various flavors of operating systems is that it installs and behaves pretty well in all linux flavors, Ubuntu, and windows versions especially on Windows 10.

Oracle VDI

  • Pricing Models were harsh to begin with, so we invested more money on the license than we needed to.
  • Due to all of the laggy, buggy, and crashing interfaces, our administrators spent considerable additional time working on simple operations.
  • We missed out on many advanced features that Oracle VDI's competitors were rolling out, so we couldn't benefit from them.
