Amplitude Analytics

If you are working with a tool where tracking actions taken by users in that tool is very important. In tools with very few users and not a ton of custom editing, this may not be necessary

Segment

Any startup that wants to get on the right track with their analytics should be using Segment rather than Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Heap, and Kissmetrics. Segment is far superior and a better value. In addition to collecting data, Segment will also solve many of your companies marketing automation tasks

Pros

  • You can always get up-to-date usage data on all of our users. It is really down to the minute information, with basically no delays.
  • There are so many usage events. Events basically exist for every possible action a user can take in the software.
  • The charts and everything are very customizable and easy to navigate even if you are not familiar with analyzing data.

  • Ease of event tracking. Just like Google Analytics, except you can warehouse your own data for a reasonable price. Warehousing your own event data is critical for companies that want to leverage data science at some point in their existence (which should be all companies these days).
  • Price. Startups can get by with the free version of Segment for a long time.
  • Integrations and sources. Segment makes it easy to warehouse other types of data such as Google AdWords, Facebook Ads, etc. It also allows you to send event data to 3rd party services like Google Analytics.

Cons

  • Marketing and Sales actions are on separate objects.
  • events can be unreliable as both software update and change. Sometimes they can stop triggering and it's not immediately acknowledged

  • More and richer sources. For example, MailChimp is a source but the data you get from MailChimp is quite limited. I ended up writing my own scripts to take better advantage of MailChimp's API because Segment's integration was lacking.
  • Better examples on how to set up event tracking. Pageview tracking is easy enough, but it would be nice if they had a sample app and corresponding code for it and showed you, via Git commits, how to add various kinds of events.

Alternatives Considered

A lot of data can be tracked via manual tracking or linking to an excel sheet, but with such a huge amount of data, it is far easier to have all of it laid out in an easy to read format. The charts and graphs are easy to use and are really pretty user-friendly. The hardest part is in simply finding the event that you want to use.

Looked at Google Tag Manager, but too complicated. Segment.io mostly competes with each individual martech tool of implementing all the event tracking yourself for each tool.

Return on Investment

  • Better productivity
  • A better understanding of our users
  • Informing and influencing our marketing decisions

  • Saved a ton of time for setting up user tracking
  • Provided user data and tracking visibility to the entire team by turning on the mixpanel integration - this only took a week or so
  • It does get hard to manage all of your events in a clean spreadsheet - you must have 1 person who leads this initiative so that you keep track of events
