Anaconda

Anaconda is great for academic and private organizations that cannot afford more expensive Python/R package managers. Also, it is more appropriate for intermediate to advanced Python users--Anaconda can be somewhat frustrating for beginners, as it takes some practice to get comfortable with the workflow. I find it particularly useful for working in teams, because if everyone uses the same package manager, it is easier to troubleshoot issues and makes for reproducible research. For wealthier organizations, a premium package management system (with tech support) would be ideal. Anaconda is also great for people working independently on code development.

RStudio

Well suited: For anyone interested in data analysis. R can help you do a simple exploratory analysis to increase your R Square with a boosted decision tree! It's probably one of the most comprehensive analytics tools.Less appropriate: Maybe if you have a team more focused on business and less on data analysis (marketers, salespeople, for instance), RStudio might not be the best, since the learning curve is complicated.

Pros

Anaconda

  • Clear install story. There are a lot of ways to install python. There's only one way to install anaconda. This makes teaching and standardizing much easier.
  • Batteries included. It's easy to install things in python, but anaconda ships with most of what you need out of the box. This helps with standardization and reproducibility.
  • Good integrations with Jupyter and other visual tools. Jupyter is really convenient when learning various python packages. Anaconda makes these tools easy to launch and to use.

RStudio

  • Rstudio is very customizable. You can easily change font colors, sizes, and screen layout. I am particular about how I like my IDE setup, so this is a big plus for me.
  • Rstudio allows you to look at datasets in your workspace with the click of a button. I do a lot of data manipulation, so I am constantly having to look at datasets after operations to make sure they look correct. The view option in Rstudio makes checking datasets very fast.
  • Finally, I love the way Rstudio manages plotting. Your plots can be viewed in one of the panels. Those plots can easily be copy/pasted or exported into a variety of file types. You can also magnify the plots and scroll between plots to look at previous plots.

Cons

Anaconda

  • Anaconda could greatly benefit by integrating with Git and other versioning software.
  • The software's default installation is relatively bloated, slower on older machines, and could be improved by allowing for a lean default installation environment.
  • Anaconda has an issue with supporting the current version of Computer-Vision, a commonly used machine learning package.

RStudio

  • When you first start with RStudio, you need to install and then reference them in your script. In my view RStudio should come with pre-installed packages that most fundamental to any data analysis. Few example packages are 'dplyr' and 'ggplot.'
  • While everything in RStudio is achieved via writing script, it should include more point and click tasks such as right-clicking temporary datasets and removing them.

It's really good at data processing, but needs to grow more in publishing in a way that a non-programmer can interact with. It also introduces confusion for programmers that are familiar with normal Python processes which are slightly different in Anaconda such as virtualenvs.

We have internal BI tools support R libraries. So, Rstudio is our natural choice for other prototyping needs and predictions. Rstudio has been rather stable for quick needs and do not plan to switch to any other tool. It is free and we are not bound to pay anything. It is quick to learn and use.

I think it's a quick and easy to use tool. The IDE is very intuitive and easy to adapt to. You do not need to learn a lot of things to use this tool. Any programmer and a person with knowledge or R can quick use this tool without issues.

There is a lot of sources to get support for Anaconda based on the large data scientist or data engineer user community. Whenever you need something, you can type it in Google search, and you can find out people who had a similar problem and the solution for it.

Since R is trendy among statisticians, you can find lots of help from the data science/ stats communities. If you need help with anything related to RStudio or R, google it or search on StackOverflow, you might easily find the solution that you are looking for.

Alternatives Considered

Anaconda

ANACONDA VS Alteryx Analytics: Even though I find Alteryx to be an excellent tool for managing extremely massive data, Anaconda is much better and easy for analytics.Anaconda VS. MicroStrategy Analytics: Compared with Anaconda, MicroStrategy Analytics is very difficult to use and counter-intuitiveAnaconda VS. Power BI For Office 365: One of the main advantages of BI for Office 364 is its capacity to data connectivity. However, it's very hard to edit data connections, once BI for Office is deployed in other platforms

RStudio

RStudio is the free alternative to MATLAB. It works just as well as the other software, and more features can be accessed but to the open-source nature. This software is more commonplace in the research lab setting due to its free cost.

Return on Investment

Anaconda

  • We can get any new employee set-up on Python for Machine learning in minutes, without any assistance from IT. That's real $ savings.
  • We started to experiment with Machine Learning a lot more, which leads to creating new projects which can have a tremendous impact on the business.

RStudio

  • We've been able to implement several predictive models that stratify risk among our patient population which has been a positive impact.
  • We've conducted several clinical program evaluations using the MatchIt package in RStudio which demonstrated the clinical effectiveness of our programs.
  • We've kept the costs relatively low in productionalizing our models by running all automated jobs through RStudio using the Linux server CRONTAB.
