Anaconda

Anaconda is excellent if all you do is data science. If you are already a python developer, then it may be more frustrating having multiple ways to manage your distribution and your packages. It has very clear use cases and makes starting off in data science much easier than figuring out all you'd need to install in Vanilla Python.

RStudio

For extrapolating the production rate and volume, it is very well suited. Different statistical models are applied to identify the right volume in the reservoir. It's not suited for very large data sets since the physical memory is used to store the objects, which kind of limits the usage of RStudio.

Pros

Anaconda

  • Anaconda itself already carries the most popular Python packages so for most developers it is sufficient enough to deal with the normal work requirements.
  • The Jupyter Notebook is a very encouraging feature which allows the researcher to apply the data analysis in an intuitive way. It provides step by step understanding the data, processing the data, visualizing the data and trying out the different methodology and algorithm
  • Both the old version of Python and the new version of Python are supported, giving a very good backward compatibility of some old Python codes developed beforehand.

RStudio

  • RStudio provides good data visualization while doing exploratory data analysis
  • We can import the data from multiple sources for processing the data.
  • Its syntax is pretty much easy to use and learn. Also applying machine learning models are very easy in it.
  • Downloading the packages/modules very easily and we can use them very comfortably.
  • We can export the data into multiple channels from it, which I think is a major boost for it.

Cons

Anaconda

  • Although some other users mentioned the installation is "simple", we did encounter some challenge in a highly controlled environment (due to security reasons).
  • Jupyter Notebook is extremely slow when the client/server side of the network's speed/bandwidth is not balanced.
  • Bootstrapping Anaconda takes too long, sometimes I even started doubting it would respond any more.
  • If there are extra python packages you need but are not by default installed by Anaconda, then some efforts will be required to figure out how to put them in the right place.

RStudio

  • Stiff competition from Python. Python is more integrated with other applications as compared to R.
  • Seems to crash more often as compared to R platform.
  • Sometimes you run into weird bugs which are very difficult to debug.

It's really good at data processing, but needs to grow more in publishing in a way that a non-programmer can interact with. It also introduces confusion for programmers that are familiar with normal Python processes which are slightly different in Anaconda such as virtualenvs.

Rstudio is my go - to language for anything involving analysis. It has far more capabilities for data analysis than Python (in my opinion). New packages for novel analytical techniques are often published. Rstudio continues to implement great updates every few months as well. Finally, I really like that I can write LateX documents in Rstudio and integrate R code into them.

It's really good at installing and getting started. It's less usable and configurable after that. If you stay in the ecosystem, and don't know how to Python any other way - it works really well.

I think it's a quick and easy to use tool. The IDE is very intuitive and easy to adapt to. You do not need to learn a lot of things to use this tool. Any programmer and a person with knowledge or R can quick use this tool without issues.

Alternatives Considered

Anaconda

I prefer Anaconda due to the control I have at every level over the data and the visualizations. Power BI does a better job at guessing what graphics to use, but these usually aren't the most helpful. Anaconda and the slew of Python extensions that add incredible functionality, make it much more powerful without such a steep learning curve as Power BI.

RStudio

  • Statistics is very simple to use in RStudio and not in Tableau.
  • Tableau is very expensive and RStudio is open source.
  • Geo Coding in R is much better than Tableau.
  • Tableau is better in data visualization and easy to use and much more interactive.( as it is more of a drag and drop tool).

Return on Investment

Anaconda

  • Anaconda helps a lot for standardizing the Python analytic environment, speeding up the research progress, saving a lot of extra setting up time.

RStudio

  • Faster and more custom data analysis and insights
  • Better visualization than provided by most default visualization platforms
  • Quick, functional democratization of data.
