Anaconda

Anaconda is the best solution when you need to make more basic algorithm training. However, when the client necessity if completely new or there're poor libraries, anaconda is too basic. When designing algorithms, I find ai-one to be very useful. Other tools that more suitable than Anaconda for more complex tasks are protege, biffblue and Nervana Neon

TIBCO Spotfire

TIBCO Spotfire is perfectly suited for the data scientist and the financial analyst who is willing to go beyond simple accounting visuals. The data scientists get the entire range of job responsibilities, from data exploration to final model building to visualization. The financial analyst with a more technical background gets the ability to present financial data in a more unique way.

Pros

  • Anaconda is one platform with all the necessary toolset for data analysis. It is very easy to set up on any OS.
  • Adding new libraries and configuring them is quite simple and easy. Traditionally this task using command prompt is not simple. Updating the existing libraries is also easy.
  • I experimented many platforms and tools before deciding on Anaconda as this platform helps with lots of business insights for enhancing my work function.
  • Sharing the dashboards to team with very good visuals is easy as Jupyter Notebooks offers various forms of sharing.
  • For someone who is new, the learning curve is very simple. Excellent community help.

  • TIBCO Spotfire performs well for analysts that need more than just real-time data visualizations. These analysts need the ability to create advanced models.
  • TIBCO Spotfire's graphs are a little bit more difficult to create than some other data visualization tools. I think this comes with the advantage of allowing the user a greater ability to customize visualizations.
  • The suggested graphs part of creating graphs is world class. It offers more than just one suggestion and makes it easy for the user to create usable graphics.

Cons

  • I am not sure as I have not explored more on Anaconda platform if we can create workflows of different tasks on data using pre-defined templates. For example, KNIME offers this kind of approach.
  • Once some analysis is completed and if the result has to be presented, currently I see the only option is sharing the Jupyter notebook.
SURA SREENIVASULU profile photo
  • The software takes a while to start up. It's almost like using a Windows 7 machine with an old hard drive.
  • Sometimes creating the most aesthetically-pleasing graphic takes a long time. This is because of the many adjustments that have to be made to a graph in Spotfire. Some other visualization software makes it easier.
  • Although Spotfire has a number of advanced modeling capabilities, it would be nice to have more rather than having to build R scripts for some of the more advanced models.

Even though Spotfire does have bugs and inconsistencies and other shortcomings, it's certainly doing a great job overall. It provides great value for the money and is user-friendly enough.

I have only had the basic training. It was very useful for new users. The majority of what is taught in the training can be self-taught by daily use of the product. However there were also many things I learned even after using the product for over a year. I would highly recommend investing in the training offered by TIBCO

The online training is good, provides a good base of knowledge. The video demonstrations were well-done and easy to follow along. Provided exercises are good as well, but I think there could be more challenging exercises. The training has also gone up in price significantly in the last 3 years (in USD, which hurts us even more in Canada), and I'm not sure it is worth the money it now costs (it is worth how much it cost 3 years ago, but not double that.)

Breadth of Deployment

In previous roles as well as my current vendor consultation role, I have seen Spotfire start in one business unit and expand to the entire company. Operations, research, IT, accounting, finance, and executives all end up performing ad hoc analyses or reviewing reports through Spotfire. Typically their are analysts or developers in each business unit or group that build Spotfire analyses. Decision makers typically review analyses through the webplayer. The ability to allow everyone in an organization to review visualizations is very simple through the webplayer.

Because it was much easier to learn and build. However, something like Tableau and Microsoft Power BI are good as well.

I have collaborated on only a handful of projects so my experience is minimal. From what I have experienced I have two noteworthy comments. First, I have worked side by side with a coworker taking turns making changes in a project, and this worked fine. We were both able to make and save changes without issue. Second, I wanted a few coworkers with no Spotfire experience to interact with an analysis I had put together, but they did not have any Spotfire license, and thus were not able to do so - which is a minor annoyance with an obvious solution.

Return on Investment

  • Centralized repository for all notebooks and analysis projects.
  • Solved for some security concerns from IT.
  • Saves money by avoiding ad-hoc computer resources for analysts.
No photo available
  • The ROI from Spotfire has generally been positive. After digesting the healthy up front cost, analysts have come to rely on the software more than most any other software product besides perhaps Excel.
  • The initial time spent on Spotfire looked like it might turn out to be a waste of money. But after putting the time in, Spotfire saves analysts time and thereby money.
  • Perhaps the most positive return on investment from Spotfire is the automated reports, eliminating analyst effort.
