We are really excited and looking forward to exploring the forecasting, and "What If" scenarios. Our current business structure makes it very difficult to forecast and project at any level, and I think Anaplan will be a great solution for us.I think for any business that has multiple, or dynamic, hierarchies Anaplan is a great solution. We have reduced the time spent on these dynamic views by using subsets and properties with in the models.I am looking forward to the increased the communication/connected planning aspect that Anaplan brings to our company. In the past we had thousands of Excel workbooks, some that were too large to email or open. We have seen improved interaction and clear lines of communication for our end users by using Anaplan for our budget process.

I wasn't involved in the selection process for this system, so I am not sure what some of the key questions might be. I can tell you that I think it's definitely more appropriate for companies that are more sales driven. We are an accounting firm, and though business development is a huge part of our business the sales model is very different from the typical sales company. I do think that the flexibility of the InsightSquared system is what has allowed us such success in using it.

Pros

  • Anaplan is great at organizing data. You can have one module for importing and then other modules that feed from there. It acts as a one stop shop for data that comes from several different SQL tables. Plus the pivot function is so easy to use.
  • Anaplan is money when it comes to modeling. You can test scenarios with different subsets changing one data point which will flow through all modules and particular versions that you need it to.
  • I am able to keep a very detailed and constantly updated hierarchy in Anaplan. From there I can branch off subsets that I need to test, such as bottom stores, merged stores, closing stores....thus I can extrapolate or dismiss certain groups. I also love Selective Access. Operators can see their group only and efficiently make changes to the forecast where they see fit.

  • The suite of reports offered are excellent! It allows us to analyze our lead and opportunity data in ways that are not possible with native Salesforce analytics functionality.
  • The user interface is aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. This is not a given for many applications and increases the likelihood of adoption.
  • InsightSquared has excellent customer service. With enterprise edition, we have a designated customer support person to answer any of our questions and ensure that we are happy with our overall implementation.

Cons

  • The charts. It has been a battle for years to have Anaplan add little nuaces here and there. For example, you can't change the font on tables on a dashboard. The little things do matter. Most of the time I just export my data and create a graph in Excel.
  • If I want to add an available column to my view, I have to show all on everything and then dig through ALL the rows/columns on the screen. It's like having to create the (original carefully constructed) view from scratch.
  • Desktop Support is weak. When we first acquired it was one of the strengths of anaplan. Gurus were always available and you could solve a problem at first contact via a GoToMeeting. Nowadays guru availability is spotty and it usually takes several conversations where someone has to ask someone else how to solve the issue. By the time I finally get an answer I've already found an alternative and have moved on to something else.

  • Bulk changes to reports/dashboards can be time consuming sometimes. But there is not much to complain about the tool so far. It serves our current requirements quite well. Customer Success has been quick to respond and help us out.

There is a dependency in this rating - in that I find Anaplan extremely easy to use, but I've spent the necessary time developing a strong understanding of the platform. Once you understand how to use it, the platform is flexible, easy to use, and fun to use.

Performance

Anaplan9.0
Based on 1 answer
Everything is calculated in memory in the cloud. It's nearly instantaneous updates when you make changes. The only time things get a little slow is when you have a massive model with very intricate calculations...but "slow" for Anaplan is not what I would call "slow" for something like Hyperion. We used to have Hyperion calcs that ran for 60 mins before you could use data. The equivalent would be 60 seconds in Anaplan.

Support

Anaplan8.0
Based on 2 answers
I feel like the support team is a little lacking in product knowledge. Several times I have contacted them to get help, and ended up finding a solution to my own problem before the team could get back to me with anything useful. I have also submitted a few bugs, and never got updates to when they were fixed in later releases.

In-Person Training

Anaplan3.0
Based on 1 answer
The in-person training is simply not worth the cost. After a few weeks of playing in Anaplan, I went to the basic training and knew more than the person teaching it. a year down the road, I was the first person to complete the advance training, and again could have been teaching the class better than the person running the session. Spend some time on your own trying out different things and you will get all the understanding you need to be successful.

Online Training

Anaplan5.0
Based on 1 answer
I'm giving this a 5 simply for the anapedia outline of calculations. The online videos and trainings leave a lot to be desired, but having anapedia around to help you understand calculations has been helpful. The drawback to anapedia is the depth they go into for calculations, it is lackluster at times. Because of that, I have been working through a much more in-depth look at each calculation on my website for users to reference: http://www.anaplanguru.com/formulas/

Implementation

Anaplan6.8

I won't rate this low due to the 3rd party consultant, because overall the implementation with Anaplan went great. We had working models in our first month of having Anaplan, and have been able to branch out into multiple facets of the business in the 3 years since our first implementation.

Alternatives Considered

Modeling and what I call the "brains" is much better in Anaplan. You can create several different model types that can all feed into a single budget or plan. What Anaplan really lacks is the ad-hoc ability that is in Hyperion. You can't identify your dimensions and find the data sitting in that spot, the data just isn't setup that way in Anaplan. This makes answering some detail questions more difficult than it would be in Hyperion. for that reason, we are using Anaplan for the modeling, and Hyperion for the data storage. It would be nice to be able to sunset Hyperion though....

Lines of Business and Business Impact

Anaplan has allowed a small FP&A team to manage the growth in demands from the business without expanding the team saving significant staff costs. The ability to quickly distribute one version of the truth for reporting and forecasting is very valuable to the company. Visibility and ease of access to key performance indicators for key stakeholders is essential.

Right now we are only connected to Salesforce. But, InsightSquared's new product slate allows for connectivity with numerous other data sources. We were interested in the NetSuite connection, and hope to move in the direction in the future. Slate allows for a lot of customization through the use of SQL queries

Scalability

Anaplan7.0
Based on 1 answer
It's going to handle most of what you can throw at it. The problem lies in the sparsity of some datasets. When you have over 5ish dimensions of sparse data, the size of the model gets bloated for not much value. In several cases, I have had to adapt my model to account for sparsity in a way that minimized use of space, but also made interacting with the data more cumbersome.

  • I'm sure the impact is positive. We have streamlined many processes and created capacity for our finance team.
