Anaplan

Well Suited
  • Any process that you expect to change frequently.
  • A process within a dynamic environment, such as high tech / the startup world, where you expect significant business process changes.
  • Any process that requires a significant number of collaborators.
  • Any process where you intend for users to update logic with Excel-like formulas.
  • Any process where using Google Docs has failed to accommodate your needs for data integrity.
Less Appropriate
  • Data visualization - Anaplan has capabilities here, but other tools are more focused on this.
  • Data storage - Anaplan is not a data warehouse and has limits on what you can store.

Tableau Server

Tableau Server is awesome for creating easy to understand visualizations for busy executives. An analyst can be up and running with some cool visualizations fairly quickly. But, if you're thinking of using Tableau Server for real machine learning, this is not the tool.

Pros

  • We really like the Data Hub concept. We are working on multiple projects with regards to aggregating data from multiple sources, and Data Hub has worked well for us thus far.
  • Agility is key for our businesses and we feel that Anaplan gives us the ability to remain flexible and reactive to the changes throughout our businesses.
  • As a administrator I really like the resources provided by Anaplan such as Anapedia. It makes it really simple to ask questions and find answers if we are having difficulty with certain items.
Matthew Cantwell profile photo
  • Allows for easy sharing of data and actionable insights with an extremely user-friendly visual interface
  • Acts as an environment to implement and enforce data governance with centralized and certified data sources
  • Easy to deploy, scale to our specific needs, and monitor

Cons

  • The dashboard functionality is basic therefore, we have to bring in Tableau to provide a more professional view of the outputs as well as to allow management to more easily slice and dice data.
  • There is an Anaplan learning center however, I have not found it useful when I have questions. We are fortunate to have Aviana Global guiding us through the initial phases of our process. Without our consultants, learning Anaplan would be overwhelming.
  • The Anaplan Connect needs to be improved. We are considering a third party ETL, but we prefer that Anaplan have this capability built into its platform.
Tara Kirby profile photo
  • I would really like to have the ability to schedule a report as an extract (TXT, CSV, Excel, PDF, or other) that I can either email, place onto a network share, or other transfer method.)

Tableau Server is an integral part of the reporting suite for a client. It meets their reporting needs and has proven to be one of the most reliable painless pieces of software used to date. I believe that they are extremely happy with the product and will continue using it into the future.

Usability

Anaplan8.2
Based on 2 answers
There is a dependency in this rating - in that I find Anaplan extremely easy to use, but I've spent the necessary time developing a strong understanding of the platform. Once you understand how to use it, the platform is flexible, easy to use, and fun to use.

I think the use case we described earlier about a non-technical user that was copying/pasting data into Word during emergencies is our best reason. This person had little technical ability, and the Tableau mobile solution powered by Tableau server completely resolved the issues. She has since become one of the most vocal proponents of Tableau.

Reliability and Availability

Desktop has always worked perfectly. Server sees occasional issues, most of which will be solved by the IT department learning more about the best way to administrate and maintain it.

Performance

Anaplan9.0
Based on 1 answer
Everything is calculated in memory in the cloud. It's nearly instantaneous updates when you make changes. The only time things get a little slow is when you have a massive model with very intricate calculations...but "slow" for Anaplan is not what I would call "slow" for something like Hyperion. We used to have Hyperion calcs that ran for 60 mins before you could use data. The equivalent would be 60 seconds in Anaplan.

Due to it's skillful use of in-memory processing and columnar data structures ensures optimal performance. However, with larger data sets, especially with LIVE connections to back-end DBMS platforms, performance degrades quickly. However, with minimal planning and Tableau data extracts, exceptional performance is achievable.

Support

Anaplan8.1
Based on 2 answers
I feel like the support team is a little lacking in product knowledge. Several times I have contacted them to get help, and ended up finding a solution to my own problem before the team could get back to me with anything useful. I have also submitted a few bugs, and never got updates to when they were fixed in later releases.

I think the folks that work in support are generally pretty good at what they do (when you get them on a WebEx). But the process of reporting issues to them and waiting for a response (via email only) is a hassle. I never understood why you can't just call them up and discuss the issues with them. It would take a handful of email exchanges before they would agree to a WebEx session. That was frustrating.

In-Person Training

Anaplan3.0
Based on 1 answer
The in-person training is simply not worth the cost. After a few weeks of playing in Anaplan, I went to the basic training and knew more than the person teaching it. a year down the road, I was the first person to complete the advance training, and again could have been teaching the class better than the person running the session. Spend some time on your own trying out different things and you will get all the understanding you need to be successful.

In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

Online Training

Anaplan5.0
Based on 1 answer
I'm giving this a 5 simply for the anapedia outline of calculations. The online videos and trainings leave a lot to be desired, but having anapedia around to help you understand calculations has been helpful. The drawback to anapedia is the depth they go into for calculations, it is lackluster at times. Because of that, I have been working through a much more in-depth look at each calculation on my website for users to reference: http://www.anaplanguru.com/formulas/

The sales consultants do an amazing job of introducing the tool and its capabilities. They are also helpful in explaining the layout of the desktop client and its different functionality.Keep in mind that they use a sample data source (MS Excel) with a very small amount of data to show off what it can do. What you have to remember is that you are buying the tool so that you can connect to large amounts of data (and possibly blend data together from different databases).

We got it working which was the main goal, but we had to create a workaround for a key dashboard that would run 24/7. In order for the view to refresh every X minutes with the updated data, we created a .html file that instructed to the browser to refresh itself every X minutes. This was a pretty simple workaround but it was something we were hoping to avoid.

Alternatives Considered

Anaplan requires less IT support and its calculation engine is far more powerful. Anaplan is also less expensive when total cost of ownership is considered. We also liked that you're able to use Anaplan for a variety of business planning functions rather than having a bespoke tool for budgets or commissions or demand planning etc.
Christopher Pope profile photo
There were a lot of reasons why we chose Tableau and the least is the cost but also the way Tableau stores data in the columnar fashion instead of in Cubes. We went through a painstaking selection process and at the end, came down to a couple of vendors and we ended up with the product that was least to pair up with Amazon Web Services to create a decent and cost-effective proof of concept and we landed with the solution we have today.

Scalability

Anaplan7.0
Based on 1 answer
It's going to handle most of what you can throw at it. The problem lies in the sparsity of some datasets. When you have over 5ish dimensions of sparse data, the size of the model gets bloated for not much value. In several cases, I have had to adapt my model to account for sparsity in a way that minimized use of space, but also made interacting with the data more cumbersome.

Return on Investment

  • Workforce Planning efficiency - so much easier than excel to maintain sensitive information planning
  • Long range plan lead time - the old excel model took weeks to update. The Anaplan model takes hours
Joe Bradbury profile photo
  • Development time is significantly less in Tableau relative to many competitor platforms. We have numerous examples where we have transitioned existing assets to Table and done so in 10-20% of the original development time. Big ROI factor there.
  • Training and ease of use is simple. Not a large learning curve.
  • Server deployment could not be easier.
