Sales performance management, various finance scenarios - Anaplan is good for automating calculations. It is less appropriate for very complex business cases.

Pros

  • We really like the Data Hub concept. We are working on multiple projects with regards to aggregating data from multiple sources, and Data Hub has worked well for us thus far.
  • Agility is key for our businesses and we feel that Anaplan gives us the ability to remain flexible and reactive to the changes throughout our businesses.
  • As a administrator I really like the resources provided by Anaplan such as Anapedia. It makes it really simple to ask questions and find answers if we are having difficulty with certain items.
Matthew Cantwell profile photo
  • Online storage of some documents. We do a lot of data sharing via cloud storage and it helps to have some flexibility when you work out of office or at home. You can upload it in the field and have it ready to go when you're back at the office.
  • Great graphics. Clients really want to see things they understand. Geophysics can be hard to understand so it helps to have so many great options for displaying the raw data we collect.
  • User friendly! I know it sounds like a simple thing but data processing programs aren't always easy to navigate from the get-go. I was able to learn pretty quickly how to manage things and get what I wanted out of it.

Cons

  • Error handling can be annoying. A single formula error can lock up your model for 2-5 minutes while it reverts back to before you pressed enter, and while its improved a little in the year I've been using Anaplan, there are certain situations where I feel like it could be eliminated or made more efficient.
  • Time subsets would be really nice.

There is a dependency in this rating - in that I find Anaplan extremely easy to use, but I've spent the necessary time developing a strong understanding of the platform. Once you understand how to use it, the platform is flexible, easy to use, and fun to use.

Out of the box, Spotfire is easily usable for simple report development and display in its web-player. Within 3-6 months complex reports can be built by dedicated developers. After 8-12 months, highly efficient, quick, and extraordinary reports can be developed by a developer. Significant work with your database team is required to produce quick reports that use a data connection with large data sets.

The Spotfire client is very reliable. There are sporadic crashes that are made worse due to the lack of an auto-save. Most product upgrades are uneventful. The one major issue we experienced was quickly responded to by Tibco. Our system admins have indicated that the Spotfire servers and the ancillary web-player systems are reliable, but requires time to learn how to deal with the unique nature of the web player and resource loading.

Performance

Everything is calculated in memory in the cloud. It's nearly instantaneous updates when you make changes. The only time things get a little slow is when you have a massive model with very intricate calculations...but "slow" for Anaplan is not what I would call "slow" for something like Hyperion. We used to have Hyperion calcs that ran for 60 mins before you could use data. The equivalent would be 60 seconds in Anaplan.

Spotfire can store data in its memory, and that data can be shared across multiple users. This way users who log-in at different times don't have to wait for a report to fetch the data from database.

I feel like the support team is a little lacking in product knowledge. Several times I have contacted them to get help, and ended up finding a solution to my own problem before the team could get back to me with anything useful. I have also submitted a few bugs, and never got updates to when they were fixed in later releases.

In-Person Training

The in-person training is simply not worth the cost. After a few weeks of playing in Anaplan, I went to the basic training and knew more than the person teaching it. a year down the road, I was the first person to complete the advance training, and again could have been teaching the class better than the person running the session. Spend some time on your own trying out different things and you will get all the understanding you need to be successful.

A three day in-person course training session allowed me to go from having no working experience with the application to feeling that I was able to function at or above the proficiency of many long term users within the room. I would highly recommend in-person training to those just beginning to work with the software.

Online Training

I'm giving this a 5 simply for the anapedia outline of calculations. The online videos and trainings leave a lot to be desired, but having anapedia around to help you understand calculations has been helpful. The drawback to anapedia is the depth they go into for calculations, it is lackluster at times. Because of that, I have been working through a much more in-depth look at each calculation on my website for users to reference: http://www.anaplanguru.com/formulas/

We subscribed to the 8-week "Report Author Bootcamp." This is sufficient to familiarize one with the visualization side of Spotfire, but not the data engine side of Spotfire. At the time that I started using Spotfire there was not a "data engine" training course. We learned this side of Spotfire primarily through trail and error.

Breadth of Deployment

No answers on this topic
In previous roles as well as my current vendor consultation role, I have seen Spotfire start in one business unit and expand to the entire company. Operations, research, IT, accounting, finance, and executives all end up performing ad hoc analyses or reviewing reports through Spotfire. Typically their are analysts or developers in each business unit or group that build Spotfire analyses. Decision makers typically review analyses through the webplayer. The ability to allow everyone in an organization to review visualizations is very simple through the webplayer.

Alternatives Considered

In my opinion, Anaplan is on a completely different level than any other CPM system. In looking at other systems, the ability to model doesn't even come close to what Anaplan can do. Reporting and BI is made better through synchronization. There is just really no comparison. If you want to have your planning really connected to your actual business, then Anaplan is the only way to go.

Spotfire has the unique feature for content analytics: Decipher unstructured, text-based data from any source (e.g., CRM case notes, support tickets, weblogs, social media feeds, emails); mix unstructured content with other data to understand root cause and identify new opportunities

Lines of Business and Business Impact

We've only been through one planning cycle with out Anaplan model, and while it wasn't a typical planning cycle given various things that are going on in our business, Anaplan made the process bearable. Had we still been in Excel, I would have needed at least 1, probably 2 more people and another month to do what we did with just 2 people in the timeline we were given.Anaplan also helps you develop a deeper understanding of the interconnections of your business. It does this in a couple of ways, 1) by forcing you to think about the connections when you're building a model since everything can be linked together, and 2) be freeing up time that would otherwise be spent trying to get a model to work in Excel or some other platform, you get to spend much more time focusing on the context of whatever is driving your plan or goals vs. the process of just trying to get something done.

Spotfire's webplayer is a superb tool to share analyses across an enterprise. Security and access can be seamlessly integrated with most of the common authentication tools. Bookmarks are a helpful functionality that allow users to capture a particular view or data set that they want to be able to revisit or share at the click of a button.Additionally, the webplayer can be integrated into existing web portals. The webplayer can be further configured to interact with a web portal. The business author license in the Spotfire webplayer grants limited ability for webplayer uses to edit analyses.

Spotfire's data engine is its number one asset. It allows the ability to load and merge data from flat files, data bases, big data sources, and images. For example, a user can build a data table in Spotfire that comprises of data from an excel file, sas7bdat file, a query from a MS SQL data base, and a query from a Oracle data base.Spotfire also has multiple methods to load data into an analysis. Data can be loaded into memory, fetched from a database on demand based on a user's actions, or push all of data integration into an external data source.Using Spotfire's Information Designer allows non-technical users to build their own queries against data bases. It also allows for central management of queries. In other words, the data and logic being used across all analyses can be centrally managed, thereby standardizing your results.

Scalability

Anaplan7.0
Based on 1 answer
It's going to handle most of what you can throw at it. The problem lies in the sparsity of some datasets. When you have over 5ish dimensions of sparse data, the size of the model gets bloated for not much value. In several cases, I have had to adapt my model to account for sparsity in a way that minimized use of space, but also made interacting with the data more cumbersome.
