Anypoint Platform

While the Anypoint Platform is a newcomer to API management tools, it still manages to be feature-rich and offers many resources for both API development and deployment needs.Pros:
  • Intuitive user interface. It's extremely easy to locate API information and consume analytic information. - Easy to do create new APIs via RAML. - Fast and easy deployments and updates. - Wide range of connectors.
Cons:
  • Customer support can be a bit slow and hard to reach. - Developer Portals for APIs do not allow for much customization. - If you manage a lot of APIs, it is hard to keep track and administer APIs since tables do not let you sort using API request date and other variables.

IBM API Connect

IBM API Connect is a perfect fit if you want to digitize and expose all your new plus old legacy services in a unified manner through the API mechanism. If your company has many different applications of different nature and working, then it works like a charm because you can separate them based on the URI which you assign to them. Another great advantage is of the Datapower gateway because you can integrate that with all most any system seamlessly and that too with the highest security protocol and volume without any issues. Another advantage is the whitelisting of the IPs which you need to do only once and after that, you can call many services from the same front-end or back-end because the IP remains the same, only the URI part varies. It is not particularly useful in a situation where you only have a handful of services and you only make changes in those and not developing new services or adding new clients.

Pros

Anypoint Platform

  • Provides wide range of popular connectors like salesforce, netsuite, sftp and many more. A user can easily integrate with those services using specific connector.
  • Support API development using RAML and desing tool. The platform is very good in data type classification.
  • Cloud deployment and post deployment monitoring is easy. A user can configure application worker as per need. Alert and notifications are real time.

IBM API Connect

  • API Connect as a platform is very advanced and allow you to create APIs, and host them on the portal seamlessly
  • Datapower is a very powerful gateway which takes care of all the infosec. Very stable product
  • The release management is also super easy, and graduating code from Dev to test and then to prod is well versioned

Cons

Anypoint Platform

  • Mulesoft has tons of capabilities however where I see it's lacking is usability, it's tough to set-up Anypoint Studio on local machines. Though flow designer is an alternate to that, however, it has very limited capabilities and it's extremely tough to build integrations there for business users.
  • Very expensive and no pay as you go model.

IBM API Connect

  • The first thing challenge we faced with the product was that if you deploying it to a third party cloud, that was very challenging and we need IBM team help at every step of the way and as well all know IBM support doesn't come cheap. A reason for that is that there isn't enough documentation done on the subject from IBM side.
  • The upgrade process is not that seamless and involves a lot of hassles.
  • You really need to have our requirements sorted out clearly because it is not very easy to customize the UI according to your needs, So you need to involve IBM from the start and give them clear requirements and then work with them to achieve it.

Alternatives Considered

Anypoint Platform

Dell Boomi is kind of similar in drag and drop implementation. However, it doesn't have as many connectors (shapes in Dell Boomi). Moreover, it also doesn't have deployment stuff on its own.Informatica is way behind Dell Boomi and Anypoint Platform, but users are still using it since they are not aware of the latest technology like Mulesoft.

IBM API Connect

We selected API connect as both tools have more or less same features, the differentiation was we also use IIB, and seamless integration with IIB was the major factor

Return on Investment

Anypoint Platform

  • Mulesoft can be used to provide an integration platform to a large number of systems like Salesforce, ODBC, JDBC, SAP, Mongo DB, etc.
  • An excellent option to develop microservices and real-time integrations.
  • Not as robust in handling large data volumes, Informatica is better in that respect.

IBM API Connect

  • IBM API Connect has been very beneficial for our business because it has increased the productivity and collaboration to a great extent. All the team members are aware of the method they need to follow to develop new API and check internally if there is already an API existing to replicate that functionality. So, reusability has increased significantly after this and saved us a lot of effort and time.
  • The work of the IT Security has lessened because now we don't need to submit IP white-listing requests to them of each new API being developed. If that client is allowed to hit 1 service, he is allowed to hit other services as well as long as he has the proper SSL certs and auth tokens or any other method of authentication used in the service.
  • The code promotion and deployment of artefacts has been really smooth and without issues. So, that is a big plus if you consider production deployment going swiftly and hassle-free.
