Apache Drill

if you're doing joins from hBASE, hdfs, cassandra and redis, then this works.Using it as a be all end all does not suit it. This is not your straight forward magic software that works for all scenarios. One needs to determine the use case to see if Apache Drill fits the needs. 3/4 of the time, usually it does.

SAP HANA Express Edition

For huge data set with some fuzzy uncommon and unusual search kind of features is less appropriate like in many places for finance related stuff from the developer point of view. Its very well suited to create a POC for demo purpose even though for production use purpose, the coding with HANA is really fast and quick resulting turn with an expected format

Pros

  • queries multiple data sources with ease.
  • supports sql, so non technical users who know sql, can run query sets
  • 3rd party tools, like tableau, zoom data and looker were able to connect with no issues

  • The best part I would recommend is the real-time analytic reports
  • As compare to traditional DBs, this edition is tremendous faster, easier, quick to learn
  • Very good for our data load in few of the traditional DBs, with which we use our SAP Lumira, Web IDE, Also its flexible to integrate with 3rd party software like Tableau
  • Personally, I like the best part is can load on our personal laptop, desktop with no special appliance restriction like most HANA DBs does, easy to setup and quick in resulting in real-time results.

Cons

  • deployment. Not as easy
  • configuration isn't as straight forward, especially with the documentation
  • Garbage collection could be improved upon
Anson Abraham profile photo
  • I would be more than happy if normal users like me which work on test data can get the system of min 64GB at no charge.. :)
  • One of feature I would like to behave with it is smart data integration,

Apache Drill7.0

if Presto comes up with more support (ie hbase, s3), then its strongly possible that we'll move from apache drill to prestoDB. However, Apache drill needs more configuration ease, especially when it comes to garbage collection tuning. If apache drill could support also sparkSQL and Flume, then it does change drill into being something more valuable than prestoDB

Alternatives Considered

compared to presto, has more support than prestodb.Impala has limitations to what drill can supportapache phoenix only supports for hbase. no support for cassandra. Apache drill was chosen, because of the multiple data stores that it supports htat the other 3 do not support. Presto does not support hbase as of yet. Impala does not support query to cassandra

HANA Express Edition will always sticks up against above traditional DB due to its tremendous features like, real-time, in-memory column store DB, predictive analytics, graphical features, integration with 3rd party tools, best analytics, quick and easy setup, more advance DW features, with compress kind of DB, and many more which are not available easily with above listed DBs with

Return on Investment

  • Configuration has taken some serious time out.
  • Garbage collection tuning. is a constant hassle. time and effort applied to it, vs dedicating resources elsewhere.
  • w/ sql support, reduces the need of devs to generate the resultset for analysts, when they can run queries themselves (if they know sql).

  • As per my current usages I have not yet to come across much with a negative impact, but for sure Positive impact is consultant, developers are being got addicted to using this Edition of HANA due to its user friendly trending features and also the best part is with newer versions we are getting more and more features which is definitely a positive impact
