Apache Kafka

Despite the disadvantages I list, I really believe that Kafka is the right choice whenever you need a queueing or message broker system. Kafka is way too battle-tested and scales too well to ever not consider it. The only exception is if your use case requires many, many small topics. Also, Kafka doesn't support delay queues out of the box and so you will need to "hack" it through special code on the consumer side.

Dell Boomi

Boomi is an integration platform. It will address integration requirements between applications, cloud or on-premise. Also, will allow you to integrate with vendors and customers via EDI or FTP for data transfers. Examples: - NetSuite/Oracle eBusiness Suite/SAP with vendors for manufacturing management and financial transactions- cloud to cloud integration(NetSuite to Namely/OpenAir/Concur, SalesForce to ERP)- on-premise to cloud: custom legacy apps that almost every company has can be integrated to cloud apps, making the transition to 100% cloud apps easier

Pros

Apache Kafka

  • Apache Kafka is able to handle a large number of I/Os (writes) using 3-4 cheap servers.
  • It scales very well over large workloads and can handle extreme-scale deployments (eg. Linkedin with 300 billion user events each day).
  • The same Kafka setup can be used as a messaging bus, storage system or a log aggregator making it easy to maintain as one system feeding multiple applications.

  • Honestly, the user interface. It has a lot of room to improve to get aligned with our products it is working with. The design is intuitive, but somewhat clunky because of the interface. It seems to be about 10-years behind other products in this area. The UI is important, especially when you are trying to attract users that may not have a development background.

Kafka is quickly becoming core product of the organization, indeed it is replacing older messaging systems. No better alternatives found yet

Dell Boomi has provided us with the ability to connect our campus together using our various existing platforms. There are many supported features and have yet to run into something that we cannot do. Its user interface is very intuitive which would allow users to begin developing fairly easily. There is a myriad of resources available

My IT and Finance teams have noted that setting up the tool is a breeze. Dell Boomi has never caused an issue during a system implementation that I am aware of. We are pleased with the tool and recommend others consider it.

The atom sphere takes a time to load, when I open a process or when I open a log. One more slow processing is when I import objects from NetSuite.
About the performance of processing, it looks like Boomi takes a time to initialize some things such as connectors before starting the process. This is also performance we have.

We use Heroku to host Pulsar and they have tons of Kafka experts that have helped us tune every little setting and give us advice via email or live chat (if you pay for premium support).

They are quick to respond. Sometimes I figure out workarounds before they respond, but I am impatient and try other options. They acknowledge issues and have a Suggestions portal, the knowledge base is helpful too.

Alternatives Considered

Apache Kafka

Confluent Cloud is still based on Apache Kafka but it has a subscription fee so, from a long term perspective, it is wiser to deploy your own Kafka instance that spans public and private cloud. Amazon Kinesis, Google Cloud Pub/Sub do not do well for a very number of messages and doesn't provide ordering guarantees as Apache Kafka or Confluent. Apache Kafka does better in scaling and availability than IBM MQ and Rabbit MQ.

We had previously used Adeptia to integrate, and they were night and day. Boomi is easier to set up, easier to use, easier to monitor, and faster. We have also used other custom solutions for integrating, and they don't compare with the robustness, speed, and accuracy of Boomi.

  • Speeds up ingest
  • Faster for UI to get data

  • Boomi has very positive impact compared to other competitive tools. My clients are very happy that they can build their systems quickly and move data. Process development time is minimal and deployment is easy.
  • In my current project, within 6 months we were able to build processes and go live. Which was well appreciated and happy with their investment.
  • I do not find any negative impact to the business.
