Apache OpenOffice

OpenOffice is the best for smaller offices, or offices that need flexibility and the ability to work with multiple file types. It's amazing when you're starting out and you can work without worrying about licensing, fees, or restrictive trial programs. It just works, and it works for free - which is pretty much the best case.

Lucidspark

Lucidspark excelled in the areas of the pre-templates that was already created for consumers to utilize. If these pre-templates were not already available for me to edit then I would have been very lost on my dissertation assignment. I also love the fact that Lucidspark had various templates of flowcharts specific to the style or area of need the consumer works in.

Pros

Apache OpenOffice

  • OpenOffice is ideal to have as an application on your PC versus utilizing an online word archive application like Google Docs.
  • OpenOffice can deal with an assortment of document types like [.doc, .rtf, .xml] , making it a fundamental apparatus for the individuals who don't approach Microsoft Word.
  • OpenOffice is a more profound programming than Word and is more open. I know, openness for a record composing programming, I know. In any case, OpenOffice takes into account rapidly evolving edges, typeface, size, and so forth, and I think shows improvement over Word, and in a simpler arrangement.
  • OpenOffice can deal with bookkeeping pages, essential information bases, introductions, and fundamental drawings. It handles the entirety of the typical Microsoft Office instruments inside one application.

Lucidspark

  • It is very easy to get started. You can open a board and start putting stick notes on it right away. It's intuitive enough that anyone can dive in and use it.
  • It is very simple and unstructured. While Lucidchart was geared toward flowcharts (and I co-opted it to my own purposes), Lucidspark is open to whatever format you need. There are templates available which are helpful, but you can also free-form as much as you like.
  • It is easy to collaborate. You can share a board with colleagues, use it real-time to collaborate on a story map by putting sticky notes together from an entire team, or take notes together.

Cons

Apache OpenOffice

  • There seem to be issues using this app in Windows 10. It worked fine when we used it on Windows 7, but after we upgraded the network with NEW Win 10 computers, it takes a very long time to process commands.
  • It will not allow any upgrades.

Lucidspark

  • I find it difficult to use the cursor and to understand how I can grab and drag a few items together, how to expand, etc.
  • Too many shapes that you can chose from, it's good to have just a proper shape for a database, a bucket, and a couple of more shape which differ from one another. But I don't think that much more than that is needed, for my use simplicity is the best, and I find myself scrolling through all the options for too much time instead of focusing on the design which I want to create.

I like it, but not enough to justify the monthly fee

It is so easy to use and produces quality work comparable to its paid competitor, Microsoft Office. I highly recommend this free software to any who need to make the switch to powerful and free Office software.

There is definitely a learning curve. The controls are counter to what you may expect or be used to. I am sure there are keyboard shortcuts, but I don't feel confident with them and sometimes the linking can be finicky. If you are a perfectionist, you can easily spend way too much time trying to make everything line up perfectly, since its not the most natural inclination of the software.

Is there really support? There is a user forum but I do not see much developer input. Support options are limited. The most recent (Sept 2019) version of the product seems to have issues operating under Windows 10, yet there are few recent comments in the community forum, most comments are regarding older versions.

We received an initial training from Lucid which was great, very informative and applicable to our own use case that we wanted to explore. We really haven't had any issues with the platform. I am not sure how to make feature requests, but this survey looks to be a good start.

Alternatives Considered

Apache OpenOffice

Apache OpenOffice is less intense on our computer systems and saves us a ton of financial resources. Since our document creation and editing needs are typical of a small business and not very complex, Apache OpenOffice is sufficient for us. We think that almost any smaller to medium sized business would feel the same way if they don't have a need to make or edit complex documents.

Lucidspark

I think Lucidspark performs best in conjunction with Lucidcharts. There are other whiteboarding apps that have just as good, if not better feature sets. However, none of these allow for the quick transition to a working document that we regularly use with Lucid. Additionally, Lucidspark had the best filtering/sorting tools and the easiest meeting tools (timers, votes, etc) in my opinion

Return on Investment

Apache OpenOffice

  • Moving to OpenOffice will save the company the cost of 500+ of Microsoft Office licenses in our company.
  • Because it is cross-platform, we could also save 500+ of Microsoft Windows licenses if we move everyone to Linux.
  • On the negative side, the lack of online collaboration and browser support may be an issue when you use clouds like Box, Workboard etc.

Lucidspark

  • I saw increased customer confidence. As we were discussing ideas and the project, everyone was able to capture details, so there was little or no ambiguity.
  • Meetings are more effective, shorter, and we have a deliverable from each meeting that all attendees can access.
  • The diagrams and workflows are beautiful.
