Apache OpenOffice

If you're looking for a free word processor and you do not need all the bells and whistles of Microsoft Office, then OpenOffice is the program for you. The software can sometimes be laggy and the design options are not quite at Microsoft level, but it is compatible with Microsoft Office file formats and there's only a small learning curve to it. If you're coming from Microsoft Office, you should be able to jump right into OpenOffice

Microsoft Office 365

It's ubiquitous and therefore widely recognized. Everyone knows how to use it and finding help with problems is easy. It does not perform particularly well, at least on Macs, with some functionality hamstrung. Also, while documents can be saved and stored in the fashion that most people are used to, this manner is not always so nicely suited for lecture notes and assigned readings. Thus, many students use other materials/file management programs/systems.

Pros

  • OpenOffice is free and fully functional. When I bought my first Macbook, I did not want to pay additionally for Microsoft Word or any other processing software. I found OpenOffice as a free alternative that met all of my needs.
  • It is easy for beginners to learn. Omitting some of the bells of whistles of Microsoft Word (for example), leaves it super user friendly but still powerful enough to get your work done.
  • Because it is open sourced, OpenOffice is well-policed software. Anyone can suggest improvements, propose bug fixes, read about future plans, and avoid the hype of commercial software.

  • Synchronization of cloud and on-device storage makes working offline a breeze
  • Office products Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook work seamlessly with Microsoft apps such as One Drive
  • Upgrades and updates are automatic and can be scheduled or accepted. Big time saver versus one-time purchase such as Office 2016

Cons

  • Though not often, the software can occasionally act glitchy: it can lag a little bit or crash altogether, though this is rare in my experience.
  • The primary document format in OpenOffice is ODF, rather than DOC. I sometimes experience incompatibility when opening files from Microsoft DOC in OpenOffice, such as formatting errors.
  • OpenOffice does not have a built-in grammar check tool. This can be remedied by downloading an extension, but I'd like to see it built-in.

  • Modules like Project are add-on costs. Not a huge deal, just irritating.
  • Email / Outlook is a bit heavy. Gmail is a much more intuitive, easy to use email interface.

There are many features of Office that we cannot replicate in any other tool. Plus people know it already. It's not going away anytime soon.

8 because sometimes you do need to wait for a callback or help. But they are a huge company and I can't expect to have someone at our beck and call the very few times i've needed immediate support. They're always friendly and try hard. Feel like they really want you to be satisfied.

Alternatives Considered

Apache OpenOffice may not quite have all the bells and whistles of Microsoft Office, but I chose it for one major reason: it is absolutely free. It is also fully functional as a free software. There is no trial, need to upgrade, or subscription plan. As a small business owner, when I was first starting out, I needed software that could meet my needs that also wouldn't break the bank. OpenOffice was the answer to my needs.

Office 365 is the industry standard, so much easier to use in the business world. It is more robust than the competition and is a mature product. GSuite may have an edge in user experience on smaller mobile devices, but that is changing. Personally, Guite's email interface and functionality are much better than the one in Microsoft Office 365. The concept of putting things in folders is a bit outdated, and the searchability in GSuite is superior.

Return on Investment

  • In my personal use, Apache OpenOffice has been a very wise decision. It is completely free and a very stable product.
  • Our use of the OpenOffice API to handle document conversion process in a programmatic fashion was very successful as well.

  • Office 365 has allowed me to be productive at conferences on my iPad. That means no lugging a heavy laptop with a short battery life. Anything that makes travel less painful is a positive impact on my work.
