Apache OpenOffice

OpenOffice is the best for smaller offices, or offices that need flexibility and the ability to work with multiple file types. It's amazing when you're starting out and you can work without worrying about licensing, fees, or restrictive trial programs. It just works, and it works for free - which is pretty much the best case.

Microsoft Office 365

I think Microsoft Office 365 is appropriate for all companies, small to large, where the need for a comprehensive and easy to use suite of tools is present. Financial spreadsheets, reports on Microsoft Word, and even automation that in a click of a button does a series of previously manual processes.

Pros

Apache OpenOffice

  • The number one strength of OpenOffice is the flexibility it gives. We can open any file type, save any file type - it's pretty much invincible. Even if we're going to work on this in a different program, just being able to open some of these ancient files that we get from local city governments is a huge win for us.
  • It's also administrator friendly - I'll use it a lot on the road because the licensing is so much easier to deal with than trying to check out a license from a server or make sure that everybody has internet connectivity.
  • It just looks pretty! It's legitimately a quality product, the layout looks good, it's not nearly as pushy as "other suites," and for the money it's the best!

  • Office 365 is a subscription based service, so you can pay a low monthly fee for your user, and plan through the company growth the budget helping you from a cash flow perspective to optimize costs.

Cons

Apache OpenOffice

  • Not the best solution for larger or complex documents.
  • Doesn't integrate well with third-party software and applications.
  • Not as good as MS Office for document sharing and collaboration.

Microsoft Office 365

  • OneNote for Mac does not have all of the features OneNote for PC does, and it's patently absurd for said features to be missing. I'm unable to make templates, make custom tags, and there's no option for freehand drawing, should I elect to try using a Wacom style input.
  • Use of the quite requires me to be signed in, and at least three times a year, Word or Outlook will decide that I'm no longer signed in, thus, I cannot continue to edit the documents I'm working on. This requires me to reboot my computer, not something I'm happy doing while trying to take notes during lecture.
  • To continue the rant about a need for authentication, I can see no reason why, after the initial purchase/download, authentication and a sign-in would be needed if I'm not sending stuff to the cloud.

There are many features of Office that we cannot replicate in any other tool. Plus people know it already. It's not going away anytime soon.

Microsoft Office 365 has great usability. No need for high expertise to start using its tools. If you want to develop something more complex then I advice previous study, like VBA coding.

8 because sometimes you do need to wait for a callback or help. But they are a huge company and I can't expect to have someone at our beck and call the very few times i've needed immediate support. They're always friendly and try hard. Feel like they really want you to be satisfied.

Microsoft Office 365

Office 365 is the industry standard, so much easier to use in the business world. It is more robust than the competition and is a mature product. GSuite may have an edge in user experience on smaller mobile devices, but that is changing. Personally, Guite's email interface and functionality are much better than the one in Microsoft Office 365. The concept of putting things in folders is a bit outdated, and the searchability in GSuite is superior.

Return on Investment

Apache OpenOffice

  • Moving to OpenOffice will save the company the cost of 500+ of Microsoft Office licenses in our company.
  • Because it is cross-platform, we could also save 500+ of Microsoft Windows licenses if we move everyone to Linux.
  • On the negative side, the lack of online collaboration and browser support may be an issue when you use clouds like Box, Workboard etc.
