Apica WebPerformance

It's a good starter solution, but it was difficult to maintain. Often, the vendor wanted to use us as a guinea pig for upgrades and then writing the upgrade document based on what they found/broke/etc with our environment. I prefer late adopter.

Issues can be easily discovered using NRQL. These issues can also send alerts through Slack or email. Having this alert feature is really helpful as in dev-ops we want to quickly identify and fix production issues. Also, it gives great visualization about the requests sent to the server side helping in identifying the right infrastructure for the applications

Pros

  • It is an easy-to-use product and you can build out checks with Firefox Selenium IDE (no longer supported). A good measure of availability.

  • Alerts sent through Slack are a great advantage. They are like flashlights for any issues that are arising. Once, the issue is there we can use NRQL to find more about the errors.
  • Custom Data collected by the APIs can be visualized through charts on a New Relic dashboard.
  • Monitor infrastructure performance of the applications.

Cons

  • It's very clunky. Infrastructure is large and very difficult to upgrade.
  • SaaS and On-premise versions are different. There is an LDAP integration but users can only be assigned to one group (i.e. department). If you are in 2 departments, you need 2 separate logins.
  • It filled a gap in monitoring for us, but we're looking to move on.

  • When the charts are very close it's hard to find the data points through the browser.
  • Performance of the New Relic browser is sometimes intermittently slow. This can definitely be improved.
  • Google Analytics provides similar features. Adding additional features to New Relic can increase customer value.

Alternatives Considered

Seemed to work well, but we didn't want to do a long renewal. Other products are maturing and better integrated with our systems. It works for now, but we're looking to replace it.

When it comes to features almost all the products have similar features. But New Relic seems to be the jack of all trades. New Relic is easy to use and the dashboards are easily built and visualized. New Relic has a great customer support and helps resolve issues faster than its competitors

Return on Investment

  • Got visibility into availability other than relying on just canary pages.

  • Issues are found more quickly and resolved faster. We don't have to wait for the customer to tell us the issue.
  • Identify the right infrastructure required for running the applications.
  • For back-end systems, we can identify what all requests are being hit by the client side. This helps in understanding the exact customer need.
