Apica WebPerformance

It's a good starter solution, but it was difficult to maintain. Often, the vendor wanted to use us as a guinea pig for upgrades and then writing the upgrade document based on what they found/broke/etc with our environment. I prefer late adopter.

Redgate SQL Monitor

Redgate is great for getting a feel of the general health across all your SQL instances, and for aggregating performance metrics to trend over time. It isn't the best tool when you are trying to drill into specific performance issues or for specific performance tuning.

Pros

  • It is an easy-to-use product and you can build out checks with Firefox Selenium IDE (no longer supported). A good measure of availability.

  • Provides a quick dashboard to identify what servers have issues, and the priority of them
  • Allows for granular control over thresholds and alerting which can be set at multiple levels
  • Let you easily go back in time to see what was going on in the past

Cons

  • It's very clunky. Infrastructure is large and very difficult to upgrade.
  • SaaS and On-premise versions are different. There is an LDAP integration but users can only be assigned to one group (i.e. department). If you are in 2 departments, you need 2 separate logins.
  • It filled a gap in monitoring for us, but we're looking to move on.

  • Incremental releases can be buggy
  • Isn't the best for pinpointing performance issues
  • Web interface can be sluggish

Alternatives Considered

Seemed to work well, but we didn't want to do a long renewal. Other products are maturing and better integrated with our systems. It works for now, but we're looking to replace it.

As a RedGate Toolbelt user, this came with a 1 server license and so something is better than nothing. Once you have gone thru the pain of getting it working its not too bad. It is a lot cheaper than SolarWinds product, and it a great starting point as to long running queries, server health and if your server is under attack. It has a nice UI to give your the heads up on what is happening to your SQL investment.

Return on Investment

  • Got visibility into availability other than relying on just canary pages.

  • The quality of the product and give a negative investment impression, on the plus side when it does work it is a god send.
  • Day to day tasks as made simpler, and a feeling of security of realised. Just don't change anything.

All prices are per server and include one year’s support and upgrades. For clusters, each node requires a license. Virtual machines also require a license. You don't need to buy extra licenses for multiple SQL Server instances on a server.
