Apigee

Apigee has been great when managing the quota based access to the APIs. It is really good and suitable when considering proxying the in-house server endpoints access with the way it provides security with API Key validation and OAuth.

OpenShift

I discovered that our projects needed a rewrite on a lot of server code, the project we are currently working on requires reverting old versions of our project, GitHub support, persistent connection, source to image, vertical scaling, horizontal scaling, simplified routing What's great is that OpenShift supported that not only that they have a basic example to get started fast. Another great feature is that their online console is very fast.

Pros

  • Manage user access, we can allow specific access to users based on their need and even customize requests of services based on user requirements.
  • Allow branding, so that SFO can maintain its look and feel but still get the support and functionalities we need from Apigee.
  • Integrates well with other platforms we use.

  • OpenShift is really designed well particularly from a developers perspective. I think as a developer myself I just want to pick my target app-server runtime and choose the cartridges I need using OpenShift and I can just deploy. If you are a newbie or want to try it out you can use the OpenShift public cloud and start from there.
  • OpenShift Integration with Git makes it a attractive point. You can also use OpenShift marker files to control when to build and when to deploy after each check-in makes it convenient to customize the build and deploy behavior per environment.
  • OpenShift and Docker integration makes it a very appealing choice.

Cons

  • Documentation could be better, as our system's department had some trouble following it.
  • Naming convention.

  • I would like to see a public cloud using OpenShift and Docker integration. I am not aware if this is already available now.
  • I would like to see a tool that can help with extracting log files from the remote server like it being available on a Samba shared folder. And other applications that want to scan for keywords in the application log can check if there have been any errors or exceptions thrown by the application.

Leverage OpenShift Online constantly at both the free and paid tiers. While AWS is convenient, it often brings more administration than I want to deal with for a quick application (i.e. Drupal or Wordpress blog). OpenShift also simplifies the DNS registration and ability to share application environments with team members

Alternatives Considered

Amazon API's gateway does not have easy to set up policies and exception handling. It does not have a tracking mechanism. However, it is better to use AWS API's gateway if you have tight integration with AWS tools.

Redhat OpenShift has been around for quite a while as I remember. I have found their public cloud to be easy to use and I haven't had to look at any other product. I have checked out Heroku but I am happy with OpenShift.

Return on Investment

  • As a public entity it is hard to say how much ROI we can have. We have yet to create a billing and ROI plan. We are thinking of other ways to create ROI, possibly through data/service barter.

  • I have been able to cut my hosting costs almost to zero without sacrificing the ability to handle higher loads down the road.
  • I haven't received messages about the site being down since I started using OpenShift. I don't have to worry about fixing things myself when/if the network or some hardware fails.
