I would think for basic level app activity, this would be a great software. For more complex level data, I don't think this platform serves as well as others out there that are available

Chartio

Chartio is a great tool for building presentable dashboards. It can export, you can add read-only access, and it has permissions levels by dashboard for users. There are other data analysis tools that help to analyze the data, but few allow for such a nice presentation

Pros

  • The visuals in the platform are easy to read and understand and make it simple to understand the data you are looking at.
  • I find that the data in App Annie is very reliable in terms of the number of downloads we see on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  • It gives me the ability to integrate the data here with other analytics and provide viewers and consumers good solid information on our performance.

  • Really easy to get going. We tested many solutions - and Chartio is by far, the quickest. Took us a legitimate 30 minutes from nothing to up and running.
  • Chartio visually illustrates your database structure. This is phenomenally helpful for users who need to understand how to join tables and get the data they need.
  • The UI is pretty typical of other tools, so there's not an additional learning curve if you've used other BI tools. It's actually more simple than most, but still pretty similar.

Cons

  • I do think there are quite a few side bar options when you first login to the software. I'd like to see the features maybe more condensed.
  • For us, it would be super useful to see more zip code or county level data in the software.
  • I would like to see a PDF version offered in the export options. It would make the presentation of the chart data more appealing.

  • I'd like to be able to see two dashboards at once.
  • Sometimes I do find myself limited by the chart types - not quite as flexible as Excel would be.

Well the fact that the freemium features are all that I need right now, I will most definitely continue to use it on a daily basis. I might upgrade to the pro version in the future if I need more data than what I am getting now. But for now it works great for what I need.

Lots of issues with touch targeting being off on mobile (iPhone 6) in safari and chrome. Dashboard and nav drop downs aren't usable. Can't arrange charts on mobile.

I use self learning materials. Pretty helpful. I find myself having to go back to the "drilldown" instructions though, and have a hard time finding hidden variables on a dashboard, so perhaps there is room for intuitive improvements (or maybe I'm just being lazy)

Company wide, Chartio is used by at least 30 members.

Alternatives Considered

We use Google 360 and are able to do a much deeper dive into the activity we see on our apps. I think App Annie is a great starting point product, but for more in depth analytics, something like a Google 360 or Adobe might be better.

We didn't do an exhaustive comparison, but afterwards I have looked at others and still feel confident in Chartio.

I actually haven't used it much, so I don't know how relevant my rating is, but I suppose if it were better, I'd probably have used it. They may actually already have it, but I haven't found a successful/easy way to share with view-only permission, and to share just specific charts or snippets, or how to quickly duplicate/create customizable views.

It's a great setup. It can be a bit complicated, and I believe their source options are limited. Although it covers all of the ones we've wanted, more or less, so it hasn't been a big issue for us.

Chartio has worked well as our datawarehouse has rapidly expanded, and the usability/performance hasn't seemed to have suffered. What we haven't yet realized is additional savings from additional users. We have some dashboard needs for users who truly just view of a few charts, and the licensing structure hasn't yet been structured in a way that would support that type of approach...having 50 "core" licenses, and then potentially several hundred view only licenses for partners that would use the application infrequently.

Return on Investment

  • Since I'm not a purchaser of the product, only a user, I can't really speak to the ROI.
  • I do think it serves a purpose and we are able to get some usable data from it.
  • I think until we add other analytical software, this was a great starting point.
