App Annie

App Annie is useful if you want to get a clear view of the app market. The free version has no disadvantages. It's always useful. If you want to go premium to take advantage of the extra features, then there are a few things to analyze, as it can be a tad pricey

Qlik Sense

The more people need access to data and the more they need to navigate within the data (drill-down etc.), the more suitable. As it runs on any environment other than Linux, it is useful in mixed systems with MACs or windows. Not really on a Linux platform (neither server nor client). If there is only one data analyst, QlikView is better as Qlik Sense really distributes the data out there for people to do their own analysis (filtering, sorting etc.).

Pros

App Annie

  • App Annie connects to 3rd party paid media and ad revenue platforms extremely well. The data across our Facebook Ads and Apple Search Ads matches exactly with App Annie pulls in. This is extremely important as this helps us determine CPI and cost-per-lead from those sources with App Annie.
  • Servicing clients from multiple parts of the world, it's important to know how our app is performing outside the US App Store. With App Annie, we are able to see where our app ranks in each country's respective store and if our app is trending upward or downward.
  • Most ASO keyword tools only offer 20-30 free keywords. App Annie provides 100 free keywords if you are on the free plan. This is extremely helpful to be able to track important keywords for iOS and Android, along with looking into other countries.

Qlik Sense

  • Easy to produce quality visualizations and reporting easily, but it still has the ability to perform more complex functions for more experienced users.
  • Ability to aggregate information from multiple sources of data. It has the ability to perform most extract transform and load (ETL) functions without the need for another product. This information can be stored in a proprietary file format for fast loading and distribution to individual business analysts so everyone is working from the same source of truth.
  • Has a very good community of support. Most questions can be answered through the product forums without the need to contact support.

Cons

App Annie

  • I do think there are quite a few side bar options when you first login to the software. I'd like to see the features maybe more condensed.
  • For us, it would be super useful to see more zip code or county level data in the software.
  • I would like to see a PDF version offered in the export options. It would make the presentation of the chart data more appealing.

Qlik Sense

  • If you do not have NPrinting, exporting a sheet/reporting is not very neat. The PDFs are clunky and you cannot see any information that is cut off by a chart's space restrictions on the app sheet.
  • While this is an improvement point already, the amount of unsupported extensions out there that do not function perfectly with each new upgrade is a bit "Wild West"y... Again, there is already something being done about this and it really is more of a user problem than a Qlik problem, but something we are somewhat irked by every once in a while.
  • The ability to really customize a chart (in terms of formatting, color scheme, etc.) is just not quite there yet. And by "there" I mean perfect. Only limited color schemes out of the box and some of the formatting and options are not very complete. For instance, if I want to resize a chart or visualization, I am limited by the square-grid that is available. Granted, you can reduce or enlarge the size of the grid to help, but being able to only have rectangles makes real-estate an issue in many application dashboards.

Well the fact that the freemium features are all that I need right now, I will most definitely continue to use it on a daily basis. I might upgrade to the pro version in the future if I need more data than what I am getting now. But for now it works great for what I need.

I have not had to contact support a lot of times. The few times I did, I got correct and lengthy responses, but they took some time to answer. Their product is very complete, so unless you have a specific question, you will probably not need to contact support at any time.

Hire Qlik consultants. It's better done by them or with their aid.

Alternatives Considered

App Annie

When comparing the free versions of App Annie and AppFollow, App Annie falls short. Not only is AppFollow more intuitive, it provides better data export integrations such as Slack (view and respond to reviews real-time), Google Analytics, multiple CRMs, etc. App Annie allows for none of these things, they are more of a data aggregate.AppFollow also has a live intercom chat to help with any problems, something that App Annie is lacking when it comes to support. The only thing that App Annie wins at is connecting to the App Stores and pulling in download and conversion volumes, and allowing for 100 keywords versus 20.

So, I also use and like Microsoft Power BI, but most of my non-technical staff prefers Qlik Sense when they need to run visualizations based on setup applications. It is just a bit more user friendly for those without a lot of technical skills.Tableau is great too and is something we continue to evaluate and consider. I think all three tools bring something unique to the table and are worth serious evaluation for data visualizations and business intelligence use cases.

Return on Investment

App Annie

  • Since I'm not a purchaser of the product, only a user, I can't really speak to the ROI.
  • I do think it serves a purpose and we are able to get some usable data from it.
  • I think until we add other analytical software, this was a great starting point.

Qlik Sense

  • It greatly improved the engineering team's productivity in data extraction and data preparation activities. What can only be executed manually when the engineers come to work can now be done while they are sleeping, and reports are ready when they step into the office. This helps the organization have faster Time To Decision Making.
  • Increased hardware and service support (for app development and post app development) costs.
