AppAssure

I belive AppAssure is now part of the Dell protection Suite. We have a very messy backup process where we run several backup products: one product for virtual, one for physical, Appassure for special backup needs. If you are looking at AppAssure, ask yourself if you're willing to use the entire backup suite from Dell. I feel one of the key things for backup is a single pane of glass. Can you manage a majority of your backup needs and processes from this one product

Barracuda Backup

For larger environments, with virtual infrastructure in place, and the network bandwidth to support it, a Barracuda backup is great. It's easy to back up an entire cluster, or just a single server. When it comes to restoring or spinning up a downed machine, the Barracuda Backup is second to none in these sort of environments. For the smaller clients, with budget concerns, only a few servers, not having the ability to spin up a failed server on the backup appliance itself is a little painful since we'd have to replace the physical hardware before getting services back online. I think having this ability would make for a great selling point to those smaller to medium size businesses that could benefit from this product.

Pros

  • Continuous backup with deduplication and compression
  • The P to V function of the software is create. To be able to back up physical machines and create a hot spare on a virtual environment was a great selling point.
  • Can back up physical and virtual (ESX or Hyper-V).

  • The Barracuda Backup is simple to install, setup, and administer. At the same time gives you plenty of options to customize your setup to fit your needs.
  • The restore process is much more simplified than many of the other backup solutions we've utilized.
  • The alerts, and reporting features and second to none. We'll often time know when a backup has failed, and have the issue corrected long before the customer brings it to our attention.
  • Barracuda's support team is great. Their intelligent, well versed in the product, and incredibly efficient.

Cons

  • The GUI and response times are far too slow. It would be nice if this could be improved.
  • Currently you can set a blanket retention policy for all protected machines. It would be great if this could get more granular and can do protection groups of machines where you can custom set retention policy
  • Once again, policies where you can set backup times for groups rather than individual machines would be great.

  • In some of the older version of the software, drilling down to restore a single files was quite the process. It's still a little slow to this day, but improvements have been made.
  • It would be nice to have the ability to spin up a virtual machine directly on the backup appliance in the event of a failed server. At current time you need a Hyper-v or VMWare environment to restore a failed machine to.
  • Once you put the device in cloud control mode, some of your options are limited when you log directly into the local appliance. I personally would like to see all the options remain the same so I can administer the device the same remotely and I would sitting in front of it.

Our initial installation really was not optimum. With the help from Dell Profession Services we were able to get our implementation sized correctly and better understand how to get better deduplication results

Alternatives Considered

Anything is better than Backup Exec. I believe Veeam is a far superior product in backing up VMs. Veeam does not have any agents that get installed on servers which is always a plus. It also connects directly to vCenter.CommVault to me is the ultimate solution. The ability to backup physical, VMs, SQL, exchange, applications, and even do E-Discovery make it the ultimate backup suite. If you are looking at a backup suite package to cover all your needs, i think with CommVault you need not look any further.

Barracuda has been one of those must have tools for our IT shop. Quick, easy to use as well as safe and secure are a few ways to describe this product. Email archiving is made to keep your end users happy knowing that they have all of their past emails at their fingertips.

Return on Investment

  • The compression and dedupe have been great. We are able to back up 10 VMs on only a 2 TB repository. We take differentials every 15 minutes and have held on to backup data for the past 3 years.
  • The pricing of AppAssure is very competitive to the market. However, now that enterprise level backup is more of a commodity, the view of looking at AppAssure should be the Dell backup suite as whole, rather than AppAssure itself.
  • Fast recovery and mount points.

  • For a handful of our clients that have had a major outage, the Barracuda Backup has more than paid for itself in the downtime or lack thereof. We went from taking hours or days to bring a failed server back online to just a couple of hours.
  • The centralized management of all of the Barracuda Backups we have deployed for our clients has increased our efficiency dramatically. Before we would have to log into each server, and check backups, now we just log in to the dashboard and view over health instantly.
  • The reporting and notifications features make it worth every penny when I can take those backup reports to a client, and show them in hard numbers of what they're paying for, how it's improved their disaster recovery time, and save them money in service calls.
