We have to monitor the backups daily, it's so bad that support is monitoring our core for us daily. Managing backups is another full-time job and it should not be this difficult with new issues every week. I don't recommend this product to anyone, stay away if you can and go with something more reliable.

Datto

Datto works well for smaller shops that just need something that will work without needing a great deal of day to day work on it. I only login to the device periodically to see where we stand on space and occasionally when we need to restore something. The offsite datacenter backup which is hosted by Datto works well for us particularly as we do not have our own offsite tech to use. In larger departments other solutions will possibly win out based on required features and setups but for the 1-10 man IT departments the Datto solutions fit in well.

Pros

  • It's good when there are no issues with the backup. It works well with file level restores if you can get the systems backed up without any corruptions.

  • Simple agent setup for new machines to be protected. A new machine can be setup on the server in under a minute whether it be a Linux or Windows based machine.
  • Local virtualization on the Datto is quick to start up. After a physical problem with a server I had the machine locally virtualized on the Datto before users had a chance to report service issues to me.
  • Nothing to do on my end to get backups shifted to offsite data center. Schedules are setup for each machine or group of machines and I sleep well knowing all our backups are safely stored offsite.

Cons

  • We have many repository corruptions and have to blow our backups away. I would not recommend using this if you are keeping a long retention.
  • We upgraded the agent and it created a new base image. Duplicate base images are eating up into our repository space.
  • I would like to see the repositories go away and use the type that was introduced for replay.

  • Entry level BDR does not do encryption at rest... this is really the only complaint I have with Datto, but it's a big one... This should be a "permission to play" feature on EVERY BDR in the industry at this point.

Our initial installation really was not optimum. With the help from Dell Profession Services we were able to get our implementation sized correctly and better understand how to get better deduplication results

Alternatives Considered

We had Replay in our environment already and the price was right. We figured it might be good to stick with one vendor. Replay was a good product and saved us a couple times with the VM exports. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about AppAssure - anything but headache dealing with support daily.

Datto beats Replibit hands down, but the software isn't the biggest differentiator. Support at Datto is FANTASTIC. eFolder hardly provides anything you can call support.

Return on Investment

  • It is taking too much of our time to manage this product to make sure backups are running.

  • Thus far the impact has been negative and the ROI is negative. The product has not been doing all of the things it was advertised to do.
  • Hard to rely on a product that is supposed to synchronize your data offsite but has been failing for two years but it does not tell you where the problems lie.
