AppAssure

I belive AppAssure is now part of the Dell protection Suite. We have a very messy backup process where we run several backup products: one product for virtual, one for physical, Appassure for special backup needs. If you are looking at AppAssure, ask yourself if you're willing to use the entire backup suite from Dell. I feel one of the key things for backup is a single pane of glass. Can you manage a majority of your backup needs and processes from this one product

Veritas Backup Exec

If you are looking for a cost-effective software to run backups with a standalone set of media (rotation of tapes, external drives, or NAS appliances) then Backup Exec is a great product. It sometimes needs some hands-on massaging when the software has trouble overwriting older data or writing to device folders, but overall it is very productive. If you have a lot of data, this tool is also very effective as it works based on number of agents and databases. If you have numerous servers and different types of databases (SQL, Exchange, etc.) then Backup Exec may not be best suited and another backup solution that's based on "total data" may be better suited.

Pros

  • Continuous backup with deduplication and compression
  • The P to V function of the software is create. To be able to back up physical machines and create a hot spare on a virtual environment was a great selling point.
  • Can back up physical and virtual (ESX or Hyper-V).

  • Design jobs with unique schedules and times, with exceptions to avoid or run one-time jobs.
  • Backup any type of database across Windows servers, including granular restoration of mailboxes or SQL databases.
  • Customized retention of data to keep backup jobs depending on age or automatic overwrite of older data.

Cons

  • We have many repository corruptions and have to blow our backups away. I would not recommend using this if you are keeping a long retention.
  • We upgraded the agent and it created a new base image. Duplicate base images are eating up into our repository space.
  • I would like to see the repositories go away and use the type that was introduced for replay.

  • Some paid agents
  • Simple interface but needs a minimum of study about functionality before having full control
  • The interface could be al litte bit more attractive

I would have given it a 10 but my organization doesn't currently use Symantec

Our initial installation really was not optimum. With the help from Dell Profession Services we were able to get our implementation sized correctly and better understand how to get better deduplication results

Alternatives Considered

We had Replay in our environment already and the price was right. We figured it might be good to stick with one vendor. Replay was a good product and saved us a couple times with the VM exports. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about AppAssure - anything but headache dealing with support daily.

There are different alternatives like Iperius, Handy Backup or similar but for what is my experience , I have always been comfortable with this software and even the company that used it has never had the need to look for other software, for this reason has never been a thorough analysis on alternatives

Return on Investment

  • It is taking too much of our time to manage this product to make sure backups are running.

  • The ability to recover highly sensitive data has always been important. It will get this done from a file server aspect.
  • We decided we needed to look elsewhere for our virtual environment backup solutions.
