AppDynamics

We execute various types of performance testing such as load testing, stress testing, endurance testing, and spike testing on the daily basis in various environments. It was tough to detect and monitor the performance issues for each type of performance testing, but using AppDynamics, it is possible to create a trend in bottleneck detection. When the performance testing projects integrated with CI/CD pipeline, then the AppDynamics plugin helps a lot. for example, if there is a performance degradation, it allows the job to be failed.

PRTG

PRTG is an all around great network monitoring tool. The biggest competitor to PRTG in my book is Spiceworks. This is purely due to price and the market they are competing for. There are a ton of other network monitoring tools and I've used plenty of them and I find myself going back to PRTG everytime

Pros

  • Integration with multiple frameworks (Java, NodeJS, .NET, etc). Good database monitoring tool as well as end-user and synthetic user monitoring tool.
  • Works great for on-premise and is always maturing and keeping up with industry trends.
  • It's been in Garter's Leader Quad for years now.
  • Very intuitive web UI and IT, Mgmt, QA, Devs, and Ops could easily use it.

  • There are many preconfigured probes to use for all types of network equipment and servers
  • Alerts can be customized and configured to alert the right staff for the specific alert
  • Graphs make it easy to spot trends for all probes
  • Auto-discovery makes adding devices easy
  • The mobile app gives you access to the system from anywhere

Cons

  • It's just so complicated - it takes a while to get to grips with and needs careful thought and planning to get the most out of it. AppDynamics do provide excellent support for this though and will guide you.
  • It doesn't list out enough Database Transactions in the APM licencing model.

  • PRTG updates a LOT. When the server updates, the client needs to update. It's not a huge inconvenience but certainly puts a quick stop to the day when the notification takes focus.
  • It's hard to gauge what resources PRTG needs sometimes. Looking at the system requirements and giving said requirements to the VM running PRTG doesn't always solve the problem. Many times, PRTG will report that the probe is using all resources allocated and having problems because there is nothing more to give. Adding more RAM or CPUs to the VM doesn't always fix the problem. It can be perplexing at times.

Alternatives Considered

Appdynamics offered so much more functionality than New Relic, albeit at a more expensive price. The UI was easier to navigate in Appdynamics than in New Relic and it was considerably easier to configure and deploy AppDynamics than New Relic. We had extensive discussions with engineers at AppDynamics and they provided great support in getting us up and running.

Easier to configure, lower cost, greater potential usage, better for mixed environments. Easier to use and certainly easier to setup than the competition.

Return on Investment

  • It has had a positive impact because anytime there is an issue, we go to AppDynamics first to see what the root cause could have been.
  • We have been providing transaction snapshots to vendors for troubleshooting.
  • So far, I have had nothing but positive feedback from other team members on the functionality and how other team members are using the application.

  • because PRTG can pro-actively show us where the action is needed, we need less time to manually check systems.
  • troubleshooting is easier when having the right data and information
