It handles auto-monitoring / configuring a dynamic performance set point that doesn't require manual configuration and the perspective is more end to end which from one perspective is good because you get a view of the whole application end to end but there is less focus than on actual response time to the end-user and detailed breakdown which is in some sense the ultimate purpose of performance monitoring.

I've found Pingdom to be the best solution for relatively simple uptime checks when you need a reliable way to run those checks and alert on failures. I haven't used their transaction monitoring or Real User Monitoring features but it may be great at those too.

- Ease of installing the agents is unbelievable. Supports almost all the servers and technologies.
- The UI is very clean and very intuitive. Setting up widgets, Alarms, notifications are very powerful features
- The ability to drill down to a particular layer in technology is useful to find out the performance bottlenecks efficiently.

- In terms of dashboard I believe there is plenty of room for improvement as it's lacking many advance like searching data within the dashboard is not possible.
- Synthetic monitoring part is still complex and need[s] to be addressed as hosting agents for synthetic monitoring is still [a] challenging task.
- The on premise controller setup requires huge resources and since it's the important component of AppDynamics ignoring it will cause loss of metrics and slowness while capturing metrics.

- there should be some threshold value for when an application is not reachable, it should alert after 30 seconds and keep sending hello packets for those 30 seconds and if still there is no response, then it should send the alert.

Recently added features have made Pingdom less intuitive for our requirements. While Pingdom has a broad offering and remains a good value, it is becoming more than we need. Our customer base is becoming more and more global and Pingdom still lacks Asia-Pacific monitoring, which we will need within a year.

AppDynamics is still a good solution as this is one the earliest tool available in the APM space and people are used to this Application usage. However other products are also doing great as Dynatrace is the biggest competitor since it adds on all the AppDynamics features plus it gives additional information readily available. Now Honeycomb is also rising in terms of SLI and SLO objectives.

Some of the products mentioned here are much more "holistic solutions" for monitoring, analyzing, logging, alerting, etc., but for the use case, we use SolarWinds Pingdom. I think that SolorWinds Pingdom is much simpler and friendlier for configuring and maintaining. We selected SolarWinds Pingdom for this case due to our previous acquaintance which left a good impression on us.
