AppDynamics

We had slowness, but didn't know where. We quickly would find out if it was the network, database, app server, webserver, or otherwise. They don't like me saying this, but it's a great "finger-pointer".

Splunk Enterprise

Splunk is a great data analytics tool for you if you have a large amount of data to analyze. Splunk provides accurate and real-time analysis of data through its dashboard. But if you not quite a technical person or not willing to learn Splunk before using it, I will not recommend it to you. Also, Splunk is less appropriate for static data.

Pros

  • Integration with multiple frameworks (Java, NodeJS, .NET, etc). Good database monitoring tool as well as end-user and synthetic user monitoring tool.
  • Works great for on-premise and is always maturing and keeping up with industry trends.
  • It's been in Garter's Leader Quad for years now.
  • Very intuitive web UI and IT, Mgmt, QA, Devs, and Ops could easily use it.

Cons

  • It is quite pricey, though does provide a lot more detail than other APM providers.
  • Traversing the call stack through multiple application layers can get confusing at times.

  • Splunk can be very expensive, and it is best to size out your environment first before procuring. Planning is key, and make sure to buy a license that is at least 2-3 times what you think you need.
  • There is a learning curve to Splunk. It takes a bit to get up to speed with the application.
  • Support is very good, but they will almost never tell you to ways to not use up your license. I had to figure that out myself, and ended up cutting out some useless logs that used over 50 % of my license.

We are using Splunk extensively in our projects and we have recently upgraded to Splunk version 6.0 which is quite efficient and giving expected results. We keep track of updates and new features Splunk introduces periodically and try to introduce those features in our day to day activities for improvement in our reporting system and other tasks.

You can literally throw in a single word into Splunk and it will pull back all instances of that word across all of your logs for the time span you select (provided you have permission to see that data). We have several users who have taken a few of the free courses from Splunk that are able to pull data out of it everyday with little help at all.

Alternatives Considered

Appdynamics offered so much more functionality than New Relic, albeit at a more expensive price. The UI was easier to navigate in Appdynamics than in New Relic and it was considerably easier to configure and deploy AppDynamics than New Relic. We had extensive discussions with engineers at AppDynamics and they provided great support in getting us up and running.

Splunk is proving to be a formidable replacement for Qradar, which we had as our previous SIEM. Qradar was powerful, but not easy to customize and quite limited. Splunk is not per se a "SIEM" but it can be in the way you used it. Also there is an Enterprise Security App that is available to buy and sit on top of Splunk, and that will take care of any concerns with needing a full-fledged SIEM. Splunk wins.

Return on Investment

  • No noticeable ROI as such but that's mainly down to our application type. E-Commerce organisations and similar would benefit hugely.
  • Did provide us early visibility of failing calls which got stuck in a loop and spammed some of our servers.
  • Positive impact in terms of highlighting slow running queries.
Rich Mephan profile photo
  • Overall very positive. It has provided visibility to what is going on within our network.
  • One drawback is the time it takes to get up to speed with the application, but this is up to the user, and Splunk education is excellent.
  • In my field, IT Security, there are few other friends to have in your back pocket better than Splunk. They are just that good.
